What's new

Is the evolution of the razor dead?

So we as humans went from using a black flint sharpened stone in the caveman days to a straight razor to do everything from shaving our harry ancestral wives to our beards. This stayed like this for THOUSANDS of years. :crying:
Then came along the single edge razor in some form or another in 1845-80. This was greeted with a lukewarm welcome. Three claps at most.:glare:
Then came King Camp Gillette with his DE and let's throw in Schick down the line. Now we have the modern razors which didn't take a great leap of imagination to realize maybe two blades were better than one. Then three, four, five and finally six. ( Although the six blade concept had already been invented. Cant find the thread but the razor looks wild. About a year ago a member found one with five blades!) Were do we go from here? Has the evolution of razor blades come to it's end? I believe yes. In terms of bladed razors I see the STYLE changing but not the form. The evolution took only 10,000 but hey, at least the guys are better looking and the gals are too! Viva la rasoir! The end. No really the end.

One day there will be a contraption that will scan your face for growth direction, soften the hair, stretch the skin, remove the hair and repair the skin all in one process. It will be very, very boring.

some things are just done right the first time. Like the spoon the razor needed little improvement once designed.
The next step in shaving will be a sound wave or laser, probably a laser giving the term razor burn a hole new meaning.

I believe you can actually have your beard completely removed and never have to shave again. I remember seeing this on GMA or the Today Show.

If the evolution of mankind isn't over, why would you think the evolution of the razor is?

Some would say the evolution of mankind is over. Very few natural pressures still exist, and studies around the world show that the fittest are least likely to breed and spread on their genes.

As for razors, I think the laser may be the end of the process. No more shaving....the horror.

Which will cause future pressures resulting in future modifications.

In Belgium and Holland we have a store called "kruidvat" they sell a six blade razor of their own brand. $9348_8717333456191.jpg
Price is about 8.5 dollars for 4 cartridges. Did not like the way they shave. That is why I'm on straights and DE razors now. :p.
6 blades is just rediculous.

Maybe but hopefully not this will be the future of razors.

Please define "fittest". Used to mean strongest. Now, leaning more toward smartest. Evolution hasn't ended, it has evolved :biggrin1:

No tattoo mistakes!
Seems to me we're in a period of de-evolution. But one might argue that's just a sub-category of evolution. Great circle kinda thing.

Needs milk and a bidet!
do ya think Nair would work on your face? i used it once on my chest (don't ask) and it actually worked well. but if it works on your facial hair as well.....then who knows what could happen with razors!!!!!

i'm betting that one day we have a razor that shaves us with a laser.

as long as human kind wishes to remove their hair the methods of doing so will never stop evolving.

Black guys have been using depilatories for a long time- they sell Magic Shave Powder and some other brand of razor less cream in just about every drugstore in the states. Both are basically Nair.
Same concept, anyways.

i think eventually the "thing" to do will be to grow a beard just like how it used to be in the 1800's. then the razor will have to evolve into something more of a trimmer.... they could just use hair clippers but u know gillette would market something to get u to buy their stuff.

i suppose thats not really the razor evolving. i can only think that in that time that very few people are actually shaving, it will give the razor a chance to be re-invented when being clean shaven comes back around. so crazy razors will be introduced to try to get people to switch back

Yes, one day I see the "automatic" razor being all the rage.

some things are just done right the first time. Like the spoon the razor needed little improvement once designed.

Lasers would be unpleasant due to the smell of burnt hair but possibly a gel would counteract that. Like Arko:blink: I think that the razor does a superb job for the instrument it is like your spoon analogy. Were at a dead end. Blade at forty five degree angle and cut. Simple.

If the evolution of mankind isn't over, why would you think the evolution of the razor is?
We won't be around to see it....

+1 I thought 3 blades was ridiculous when the Mach 3 came out. Now that they're up to six blades (Dorco also makes a 6 blade) it's just plain crazy.
