Is the Case Sodbuster Jr. the best pocket knife ever made?

Why, yes. Yes it is.

Perfect size. Nice carryable weight. Comes in a chrome vanadium version if you like an easy-sharpening blade, and a stainless steel version if you frequently get your britches wet. Excellent minimalist construction, none of the extra blades or doodads or gizmos you don't need, just everything you do need: one handy sized blade. Very affordable price, too. Every man should have one.

I have one and like the minimalist design but I do prefer a locking blade and one that doesn't have the pivot end of the blade exposed when closed.

I like that sort of simple knife. Most people don't need a locking blade. The average person uses their knife to cut string and apples, open the mail, and pick their feet in Poughkeepsie.

Most of my knives don't lock, and I still have all my digits.

If I recall right it had to do with the type of people it was marketed to "sodbusters" farmers people that made their living off the land and needed a simple well built knife that wouldnt break the bank. I heard that somewhere and it makes sense no clue if that is true.

I gave a Case Sodbuster as a Christmas gift last year and it was intriguing in it's practical simplicity.

I gotta agree with Legion. I still like the folders. My idea of the ideal pocketknife is the Case Baby Butterbean. Easy on the pocket in which it is carried and sturdy enough to tackle tasks out of proportion to its size.

I'm with you. My EDC knife when I am at work is a baby butterbean. Big enough to do the tasks I need it for (90% cutting tape and opening boxes) and small enough to not freak people out if they see it. Nice little knife.

And it is small enough to carry in suit pants without creating a "happy to see you" pocket bulge. If I am doing something outdoorsy, then I'll carry a bigger blade, but for city time the baby butterbean is ideal.

I would buy a sodbuster, except I have a couple of Opinels with almost the exact same blade shape, and they are also very nice, but cheaper. (and you can lock the blade, not that I bother.)

I've heard that description of the history of the sodbuster as well. It was made for farmers to open fertilizer bags, stick the blade into the soil to clean it off, no emblems or other adornments on the outside to come off during hard use.

It was mean to be very simple and practical.

I love the black CV my dad gave me, and carry it most every day. Other than utility knives, it's my only pocket knife that isn't stored away right now. It's also become my favorite paring knife.

I've been thinking of a yellow Sod and also a lockback from another brand. Apparently, German Eye knives are both well thought of and out of production. If they are indeed slowly disappearing from retailers, maybe it's time to get one of them.
