Is Proraso (CO Bigelow) overrated? Am I the only one?

Does anyone else seem to find the Proraso line overrated? I can get these labeled as CO Bigelow in nice metallic tubes.

It seems to be "missing something". There doesn't seem to be as much slip to the product compared to the hard soap pucks

I get the feeling that it's meant to be paired with the Preshave

I think it's a pretty good value for the money. You can usually get Proraso at Italian Barber for 7.99. Great performer. Although, I'm not too crazy about the scent. I prefer the Proraso red.

Green and White? Yes, for lack of slickness.
Red? No. It's one of my favourites.

I don't know why they're so different in performance.

You can fix Green or White by adding a bit of Cremo (or similar cream).
The Green or White seems to provide the structure (for want of a better word) and the Cremo makes it slick. I end up with lather porn that is also slick.

The regular Proraso/CO Bigelow lines are not meant to be top of the line soaps (though I'd their Single Blade line attempts to be). It’s more of your solid, classic, tried and true, drugstore brand variety.

For the money, they are good baseline soaps from which to judge others. Each is formulated a tad differently to try and provide a decent variety.

I like green just fine and never had any problem with slickness, as always YMMV. I personally consider it a solid performer, and I love the smell and menthol blast it provides.

Old-school Proraso is the Toyota of the shaving soaps. It isn't fair to compare it to a Porsche, but it often is better than overpriced lower-end Mercedes (Smart car).

I think it’s hard to call it over rated when you look at the price tag.
It can’t compete with many artisan soaps, but it isn’t trying to compete either.
I don’t have particularly sensitive skin so for the cost it is a pretty good value for me.

I guess it depends on what you consider overrated is. If you bought it based on the generally great reviews, and were left wanting, then I can see how you'd feel it's overrated. On the other hand, many feel that the price to performance ratio makes it one of the best bargains out there.

As with just about all things shaving related, YMMV. :001_smile

Proraso works really well for me. Maybe not as much residual slickness as some more expensive soaps and creams, but certainly enough to get a clean, irritation free shave. Besides, B&BW regularly puts it on sale buy 2 get 1 free, three tubes for $20 is a bargain.

I guess I was just used to having a lot of glide which many cheap tallow soaps give plenty of

This is a cream which seemed to work well when paired with a pre-shave oil

I've been wrestling with it for months. Not ready to count it out just yet. I want to like it, but I dont really use it. I have the white. In the past it has caused the blade to really tear up my face. Not much glide.

My reply to this thread landed in another post so I'll repeat it here: I think it's rated well. I got better shaves than from Fine soaps. It's the best cream I've tried so far. I like it better than TOBS, Trumper and Stone Cottage. I still want to try TOBS Sandalwood however.

Proraso green seems just as slick and high performance to me as anything I have used. There are cheaper products that perform as well, but the scent is my favorite of all creams.

It's OK for the price but I don't use it (or Cella) anymore. I'd rather choose something from the larger variety of Stirling soaps.

I don't think it is overrated. It is good product in terms of money/quality ratio. I just don't like the scents much, so I don't use it.
