Is Old Spice the most iconic aftershave ever?

Its the brand i saw in my father and grandfather’s cabinet, and i assume the same applies for millions around the world. When i first started shaving, it was the first brand that always came to my mind.Others have went and gone, but it seems to have stood the time. It has this certain nostalgia which supersedes the rest.

Can we thus call it the most iconic of all aftershaves?

Iconic doesn’t necessarily mean the best Ofcourse, since im sure others have been better at various points in time, but just going by the overall significance it has held for generations of wet shavers.

I think it’s a close tie between it and Aqua Velva. Old Spice probably takes home the win though.

I’m young but I remember a lot of old re runs and seeing The Lone Ranger among others advertise it. I thought Aqua Velva was an ancient classic, and Old Spice the new hip kid on the block. Turns out Old Spice is just better at rebranding.

It is for me. It was probably the first AS I used but then Aqua Velva was probably just as popular. I don’t recall using AV and don’t remember the scent. I still use OS daily. Tabac is my alternative on occasion but my preference has always been Old Spice.

Old Spice or Ice Blue Aqua Velva. Yesterday I wore Old Spice Original and today Aqua Velva. I like both, but Old Spice is the winner in my book. Just darned good stuff. Smells fantastic, feels good and does what it is made for, and you leave a nice scent trail with it. Aqua Velva is second in all counts. If I had to live with only one, it would be Old Spice.

really like the original scent, all the spin-offs they do hold no interest for me. I agree that Old Spice, Aqua Velva (and perhaps Avon) are the most famous. There are a lot of men who grew up on Avon products (me among them)

OS is a classic! However, Pinaud Clubman is definitely a contender for the term ‘iconic!’ :a14::a14:

Dunno but Aqua Velva is what my grandfather used to use, and I think I remember my dad using Tabac before he switched to electric razors only

To me, Pinaud Clubman is the most iconic aftershave.

In terms of what our fathers and grandfathers used, I agree that Old Spice is a top contender. English Leather is another I remember being everywhere as well.

OS, AVB, Clubman.

IMHHO. YMMV.

Not just your opinion. That order is a given. OS, then a l o n g way back to AV, then maybe Clubman.

People's preferences my differ, and they're free to like whatever they choose, but Iconic is different.

To use a car analogy, I may prefer my Subaru, but a '58 Corvette is iconic.

Same here re: the Old Spice and English Leather. These are the ones that make me think of my father and Grandfather. Pinaud Clubman brings back memories of barbershops but no one in my family used it.

If someone asked me to list some Iconic aftershaves, OS would be in the list, but not on top, maybe 3rd or 4th.
If someone asked me to name THE iconic after shave, it would be Skin Bracer.

+1... If you were to ask 100 random people to name a single aftershave, more than 50 would say Old Spice and the rest would be divided amongst all the other brands ever made. To me, Old Spice is that far ahead of all the other brands. That is iconic.

At least among the general population. Ask 100 people here and the results might be very different. This is very much a specialist's venue. Of course, that says nothing about the quality of the others, just how well they're known.

Agreed. General population is what I meant by random people. There are many very smart shoppers with fine tastes here on B&B!

If you would have asked me a year ago before I started buying razors, soaps, brushes and aftershaves, what one aftershave stands out above the rest... Old Spice. My dad used it, my father in law still uses it and it is what I first sought out when looking for an aftershave. I quickly learned here on B&B that the current iteration of Old Spice is not the same, so I had my bottle shipped in from India. I may still find a "vintage" bottle on Ebay to add to my den. It just brings back fond memories every time I splash it on. Iconic!
