So I've been using my new DE (Muhle R89) for a week and a half now. I'm getting some DFSes routinely. As I've been sifting through the posts here on B&B, I find myself wanting to get a second to see what I'm missing. To that end, I've been thinking of trying to find a '40s SS. Any advice on whether this is a good second one to go for?

Why not try a Merkur HD, or a Merkur Slant?
I think a 40 SS is an excellent idea. That way you'll be able to compare modern versus vintage.
The 40 SS is a great razor. And it is never too early to start with RAD.
You have a fine razor already, but I know how curiosity is. I'd look into one of the vintage Gillette adjustables, like a Slim or Fatboy. Both are great shavers and will give you a different experience.
It's never too early for RAD . . . that is what we live for!!!
