What's new

Is it me or .....

I'm buying "old" aftershaves, stuff I remember from my long ago youth, things like Tabac, Old Spice, Brut, Canoe, Quorum etc., nothing too expensive and after reading reviews on here saying this was the dogs dangly bits  I recently got some Aqua Velva, I either got a duff bottle or the stuff we get over here isn't the same as yours, this "Williams Aqua Velva" has no menthol / cooling, doesn't sting (no or low alcohol?) and the smell is faint and inoffensive when first applied and on me vanishes after 5 minutes.

It wasn't too costly but I'm not gonna throw it away, instead I'll add some of the menthol crystals I bought to put in my Witch Hazel, to see if at least it can be as refreshing as my Alcolado Glacial, and if not it then goes in the bin :mad3:

I would agree that if it ain't cool and sharp, it probably isn't the same AV that I know.

Yeah, that sounds strange. Aqua Velva doesn't deliver the frigid blast of Osage Rub, but it certainly cools. Plus it smells and feels much better. I think that you've been had.

No, it wasn't me

quote - In Europe, Aqua Velva is still produced and marketed with the Williams brand name. Williams is a division of the Sara Lee Corporation. European Aqua Velva is made in the Netherlands and is lighter in color and in scent than the American version. The composition of the European Aqua Velva is also more complex: it contains Citrol, Citronellol, Coumarin, Evernia Furfuracea, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellol, Limonene and Linalool, all ingredients that are absent from the American Aqua Velva. In practice, the European Aqua Velva has a more subtle and more complex scent. - unquote

so its USA 10 Yurrup 0

We have no cooling, no sting and no scent but it's far more subtle

/goes off to get the menthol crystals and alcohol (oh and some blue food dye)

What is the Mennen Skin Bracer like over there?

Have to wait while next year then when we visit, I'm bringing an empty suitcase just so I can pack all the Osage Rub, Ivory Club pour Homme and Aqua Vela I intend buying  oh and Lilac Vegetal as long as the partners not there

coumarin? thats weird.

No it's not. Coumarin is actually seen in a lot of cosmetics. It smells like similar to freshly mown grass. Sure, it is toxic in large amounts, but it is found in naturally in a lot of stuff. Vanilla and cinnamon come to mind, in particular.

and after googlying it I see it's also found in Tonka Beans, never seen em or tasted em but I know that Tonka beans are used as a "fragrance guide" in several of the Colognes/Aftershaves I've investigated

I find it weird because I never noticed before. Oddly enough, my bottle of Clubman Special Reserve came in today, and it had coumarin in it. I also find it weird because it is the precursor to anticoagulants like warfarin.

In hindsight, "interesting" would have been a much better choice of word, because it is just that--interesting. Like the time I discovered the difference between Ving Rames and Michael Clarke Duncan. I always thought they were the same guy!

I know it's not the real deal, but the European Aqua Velva is not all that bad. I even think I'm liking it more and more over time. It sure seems complex since an hour or two after splashing it fades into a very nice masculine scent. I've never tried the original Velva but this one is a good choice (and cheap!).

On me after 10 minutes it fades away completly, its gonna get mentholated and used as a non scented cooling splash on
