Is Bigger Better?

Hey Guys,
So im thinking about getting my second brush, Im thinking about a Huge brush like the Kent BK12, or something 28-32mm. Is a bigger brush better?

I prefered a smaller stubby brush with a short loft, total heights around 100mm, with 19 and 21mm kots. I then tried a FS cubby in faux horn (still yet to shed a hair), 26mm kot and a 60mm loft. I havent looked back. I found that my lather improved greatly. Even my synth travel brush is around 125mm total heigh and a 27mm knot. SO I would say while not better bigger is defo one to have a round.

Bigger is better! But I think a Simpson Chubby, Morris and Forndran, Thater, or Rooney Heritage would serve you better than the Kent.

Bigger is better. I use a TGN 28 mm in a custom handle as my daily brush. The 28 mm puts my 24 mm to shame.

BTW - A loaded 28 mm brush is not a precise tool. Shaving cream everywhere.

Some describe the Kent BK12 as cloudlike and pillowy. I've never used one so I can't really say for sure.... but if I were to buy a Kent brush to try it would be the next size down..... the BK8. I've never tried a truely huge brush though.... biggest knot I have is a 25mm.

My first brush was a 20mm.
After replacing that with a 22mm, I couldn't figure out how I stuck with the smaller brush for so long.
After replacing that with a few 24mm knots, I couldn't figure out how I stuck with the smaller brush for so long.

I took this data and placed it on a graph below. It shows empirically that bigger is better.

See, it's science, you need a bigger brush.

It all depends on HOW you intend on using the new brush.

what are you looking for? A bowl lathering brush or a face lathering brush?

I do both, but more often i bowl lather.

You won't find a single brush that does both exceptional well.

I find that some of the "super hero" sized bowl brushes are just too big to fit in most of my lather bowls. I have a Polo 12 that makes my Georgetown scuttle look like a brush scuttle. The brush is too large to get into just about everything and whip up a decent lather.

I have a Rooney 3XL that is a killer face lathering brush but is pitiful making a lather in a bowl.

You first must decide how you want to use a brush before you go out looking for one.

I used my Rooney today and had a fantastic face lathering experience with it. If you are looking for a very large face lathering brush you would be hard pressed to find one larger and better suited to face lathering than the Rooney heritage 3XL stubby

Like Turtle says, how you intend on using it.

I'm strictly a face-latherer and a small or medium size brush is all I need.

Guess it comes down to what you like.

I face lathet with an Omega Syntex Pro 49, and it's really good with Arko. I'm a big guy, so I need a big brush on my big face.

I like bigger brushes, 28/30mm but I wouldn't say they're better, it's just my preference. A whole lot of luxury.

I still don't know how people get lather all over the place just because of the size. It's not a fire hose for goodness sake. Who needs a brush to be a sniper or ninja star...

Better at what? My usual brush is a Kent BK8, which I can recommend without reservation. For bowl lathering it is wonderful. It makes lather quickly and carries a lot of lather to the face. It also puts plenty of lather in my ears and holds enough lather for another pass after I've lathered my face.

I find it a bit too soft for face lathering. I personally wouldn't go any bigger.

I believe there is also a religious proof:

God made the universe.
The universe is getting bigger.
Therefore, bigger is better.

Bigger is not necessarily better IMHO.

My biggest brush is a Kent BK12 and it bowl lathers excellently.

My smallest brush is an EJ Medium Silvertip and it bowl lathers excellently.

My floppiest knot is a Vulfix 2234 Silvertip and that bowl lathers excellently.

My denser brushes (Simpsons and M&F's) also bowl lather excellently.

When bowl lathering size and density are both relatively unimportant.

There are, however, some brushes which are just too dense to bowl lather as well as I would like (such as a Chubby 2 - it takes an age to get a decent lather, and all 2-band brushes I've ever used (apart from a L7 2-band), have been a PITA to use in a bowl.

I can't speak for face lathering though (as I don't face lather), and I suspect that changes in density and size might give very different outcomes.

Depends on you. I face lather 99.9% of the time. I find that anything over 26mm is way to big for me. I usually use 20-24mm brushes.
