Is a Gillette Super Speed 1959 milder than an Edwin Jagger 89?

I would like to get a 1959 Super Speed that is milder than my EJ89 but more aggressive than my Weishi. I could get a Blue Tip, but I hear that is pretty much the same as a Weishi. So, is the 'normal' flair tip between a Weishi and an EJ89, or is it about the same as an EJ89? Since I want a vintage, I suppose my other option may be to just get an adjustable like a Fat Boy, but not sure if they are worth is as they are so pricey.

All of the vintage Super Speed razors are milder shavers than your EJ89. It sounds like you might want to pick up a Red Tip. They were the most aggressive of the Gillette Super Speed razors and were characterized as the Gillette Heavy by the company. That said, they are still more mild than the EJ89. I have a 1957 Red Tip being delivered this week and am looking forward to shaving with it.

Really, you think the Red Tip is MILDER than the EJ89. I never would have thought that as the EJ seems like a very middle of the spectrum razor, but great a shaver. So what do you think of the adjustable Fatboy vs the Super Speed? Have you tried a Fatboy?

BigFoot

I wanna be sedated!

Two completely different razors so they are pretty hard to compare. The FB is heavier with a thicker handle. You can dial it from pretty mild to fairly aggressive. It has a bigger head so some folks have trouble getting it under the nose etc. If you want a more aggressive razor the Fatboy will give you that, but so will an old type or a 40's style SuperSpeed for a lot less $$.

To make a long story short we are all different......try em all, if you don't like something the BST will be in your not to distant future.

I would say you would make a good choice by going with an old super speed . You can vary the way it shaves by using either a sharper blade like a Feather or something duller ,like a Derby .

My only modern razor is the EJ 89. I mostly shave with SS. I don't have the red tip though......And, to me, the SS, all of them, are slightly more to much more mild than the EJ 89.....But, I Love them.

The SS are fairly inexpensive and abundant, so, you can try them out with out taking too much of a hit.

Also, not too hard to get your birth year if that is what interests you.

The flare is too mild for me. Try the Red Tip. I like it a lot. I think it is similar to my EJ89 in comfort and effectiveness.

The 1940s super speed is imo the best razor ever made. You just can not get better balance of weight and blade gap.

I've owned the fat boy for several years and love it but I like the simplicity of the 40s superspeed more.
I also own the red tip and like it too, but I am a gillette geek.

I think the Red tip is more aggressive than the EJ. Of all the Super Speeds, I like the Ranger Tech and late 40's style are the most ideal shavers. They are a little more aggressive than the later style super speeds yet it shaves quite smoothly.

Sorry, no experience with the Fatboy. I've never even handled one.

I agree completely^^^

The only problem with the Superspeed is that your eyes will be opened and your RAD will be insatiable. Seriously, it's generally milder and smoother, but extremely effective with a Feather or Gillette blade. Gillette really knew what they were doing with the Superspeed's.

Get one and enjoy it.

Happy shaving,

Patrick
