Interesting talk

Thanks, that was interesting. He mentioned that he didn't know what vegetable ivory was; it's tagua nut. Very hard stuff. Probably mostly used for buttons, small knobs, decorative stuff. My folks have a couple carvings of it from South America that are similar to scrimshaw.

They also use it to make Japanese Netsuke.
 
Very interesting. Having worked with all of those I can say my biggest surprise is how well the natural materials lend themselves to being fashioned into objects for man.
 
Years ago I read Beth Markum’s “West with the Night” a true story of her life, the first licensed female pilot, in 1930’s Africa. She writes about flying over Africa and seeing heards of elephants from her airplane, “as far as the eye can see.”

Much like folks talk about the American Buffalo. By the way, West with the Night is an excellent read.
