Interesting Selection

I live in a small town and we only have a grocery store and a dollar store. I was in the dollar store this morning and walked through the shaving section to find quite a selection of after shaves. I've been disappointed with the selection at Walmart and Walgreens, and was surprised that they had such a variety. I ended up purchasing Aqua Velva Blue, being the 3rd aftershave purchase this week! I had previously picked up some Gillette Cool Wave, and Adidas Sport Fever. I realize this is the AS forum, but while I'm on a roll, have any of you had the local Walmart re-organize and cut down on the products they carry? I've been looking and I can't find ANY Shave Soap at Walmart or Walgreens. They used to at least carry Williams, but now they have none, no DE blades at Walmart, not even the knock off store brand, and only about 2 or 3 splash on aftershaves, most of what they have is a gel.

Now I'll get off my soap box, but I would like to thank B&B for opening my eyes to AS, and helping me enhance my wet shaving knowledge to get a better shave. Next time your at the local discount shopping store, if you normally don't, stroll through the shaving products and check out their selection, you might find something you've been looking for.

They reorganized the shaving aisle on my side of the city walmart. half the aisle is dedicated to cartridge razor blade replacement packs... in the middle is about two or three feet AT MOST selection of aftershave/shaving foam or gel. On the bottom rack, all by its lonesome is VDH Deluxe shaving soap. So at least they kept that around. Sometimes directly next to it they fit in the VDH shaving set with the bowl/brush/soap. Every time I go there it sells out so there must be quite a few people trying it out there! And I'm not the only one buying VDH soap either!

When it comes to aftershave at my walmart, the yhave some gillette balm or gel (is that any good?), Nivea Balm, AV (blue, sometimes musk... but never ice sport which is my favorite), skin bracer, letricshave, and maybe a couple more that I am forgetting.

They put the VDH soap next to the hair tonic and brylle(Spelling?) cream. So i always feel so old when I reach for it and people looking at what I'm picking up. I imagine they must think I'm crazy.. well I'd rather seem old fashioned and crazy then deal with some dry goo from a can.

Walmart down here in Florida, at least the two I frequent, have done the same thing. They did away with Williams soap and Burma Shave brushes and now only carry one flavor of VDH as well as the kit. Interestingly, Walgreens used to have a much larger selection of men's shaving items only to close out most of them.

I started paying attention to the shaving gear in stores and have noticed that different locations can stock different items. I've looked at Wal-Mart and Walgreen's in two towns 50mi apart and, while similar, they all had different products.

What I can't figure out is why one Walgreens carries the VDH brand while the Walgreens one town over carries the Surrey line. Same soap, different name, one town over. Very strange.

The Walgreens in my area (Wash. D.C./Baltimore) all seem to have different items in every store, even those near each other. Most have only Clubman AS- one or two may carry LV. The shaving aisles are pathetic. Strange thing is, as you go further south into Md. the Walgreens there have Pinaud Bay Rum.

We have a new Bed, Bath and Beyond in Annapolis. I stand in absolute awe in the shaving goods aisle when I go there. Almost anything you can imagine is there-every kind of canned cream, tons of aftershaves, Bic Metals, and more deodorant, toothpaste, men's items that you havn't seen in years. There is no need to go anywhere else. Plus the prices are reasonable.

When I'm there I feel like Charlton Heston looking at the Statue of Liberty at the end of Planet of the Apes, just in disbelief!!

That's interesting. Bed, Bath and Beyond near me doesn't carry anything like that. Also, the Walgreen's close to my house have a terrible selection, but if you go twenty miles or so away, they at least stock Pinaud Bay Rum.

My Bed bath and Beyond does not carry any lathering creams. I was very disappointed.

As a matter of fact... there is no section for mens shaving. They had a little kiosk in the middle of the floor right near the register/customer service. I only took a quick glance since everything there was for cartridge razors, disposables, or shaving gel/foams. Bleh.

I guess it comes down to the manager of a given location. I notice it all the time with restaurants.....one Red Lobster should theoretically be the same as another, but that is *not* the case!
