Interesting Jnat

I couldn't pass on this one.
Finisher only - too thin for heavy work I think.
This is one of the harder Suitas I've had, great feedback and action. First edge was sublime.

I tried both ways, seems to be fine for me with water only but it'll prob take a few trials to see what works best.

How thick is it? I've got 3 jnats so far and two are about an inch thick, the latest is significantly thinner but seems to be a finer finisher and was wondering if the finishers may have traditionally been cut thinner intentionally.

Just measured mine, it's between 12 and 14mm so a little thicker. I nail varnished it today, have you considered mounting yours?
the one I'm talking about was in my latest thread, my birthday jnat. It's a hell of a finisher at first sight. I'm really looking forward to playing with it some more.

Mine might be a bit thicker in some places - I just eyeballed the thickness.
I did consider mounting it, might just leave it as is and use it hand-held here/there though.
Might trade it off eventually too - not sure yet. I got it because it seemed kind of unique.

I got a holder with my first 2 jnats but as I had already gotten used to holding my coticules I've never gotten on with it. I find holding is much easier and my strokes are lighter.
In any case I'd love to see more pics of this stone - looks nice from the angle in the above picture. What's the kawa like?

Nope - that's an alleged Kuro Renge Suita - mine unknown but thought to be Nakayama.

This is my Okudo Suita

Very cool - waiting on this Suita was painful. Hopefully yours will come to you more quickly.

. What's the kawa like?

There's a glimpse of it in the corner above. Has that pronounced orange/red to burnt umber to black thing going on; that coloring seems to be specific to the Eastern Mines - most notably Nakayama. At least that s what I've encountered first-hand thus far. Some seem to feel its specific to Nakayama, but I'm not convinced that's an absolute fact.
I'm not convinced that anyone can truly determine what mine any stone came from based on the skin alone, but it's an interesting topoic for discussion.
A long while ago, when I was first interested in Suitas - long before razors were in my life, Nakaoka-san explained that Kuro Renge only came from Narutaki Mukoda.
The original owner of this stone above said it was Nakayama.
I've had several Narutakis, Nakayamas, and Shobus with similar skin.
So - I sent a question about this to one of my mentors, in the meantime I'll see if I can find something that needs to be sharpened and take it for a spin.

Would that be the unfinished underside? Is this a skin? And is this more or less desirable on a rock?
