Instead of a replate....

Instead of a replate why not just try to polish it. If you don't care that the top plate may look a little copper or the handle a little brass, polish it. I did this gold tech with my large buffing wheel and a die grinder with a polishing wheel attached. It's a cheap alternative to a replate and gives you something a little one off. I also have a hand held Dremel that I'm sure would work, its just that its much smaller and the pads are more expensive. At that point it may be more effective to have a replate done. If you've polished one up please share I'd like to see what others have done as well with their ugly ducklings.

I do this to my old type and my new improved. They'll stay pretty until you use them a few times, then they require light buffing. I prefer the polished brass to old dull lacquered gold.

Now remember that when you go to the copper that the head is more susceptible to heavy scratches due to the softer metal. That is why they were plated in the first place.
As far as shaving they do just as good of a job as one with a plate.

Here is one of mine that I cleaned down to the base metal on the head.

I had a LC New I spent countless hours hand buffing to remove the remaining plating/lacquer (I have no tools for that kind of stuff) and it was pure hell. It looked nice, but it had a strong metallic stink to it when wet and it would not glide smoothly against my skin and would skip a lot. I tossed it in a drawer for about 8 months, now Dave at West Coast Razors has it as we speak..plating it in nickel. I wish I had done that to begin with!

Your Tech and the New below look good. You mentioned the tools you used but what polish or substance did you use to aid the wheel.
