Ingredients for Making Aftershave

After hearing about members on this forum & watching a few how to videos on U-Tube about making homemade aftershaves, I'm curious as to where fellow gents are purchasing their ingredients. Where is a good place to start to purchase oils, fragrances, ect??

Thanks FaceScraper for the info. I have Glycerin & Witch Hazel but I didn't know exactly where to find the essential oils but I'll check Wholefoods for sure. I was thinking of looking online also but sometimes you just want to get it locally from a brick & mortar store!

I've purchased the EO's from Whole Foods as well. I prefer to smell them before buying them so buying online is out. I don't use EO's any more though, I use a bit of one of my favorite colognes now. Enough to make it enjoyable, but not enough to last.

I can also purchase another ingredient I use in my homemade AS mixture at Whole Foods, and that's liquid Aloe juice.

I ordered my EOs and glycerine from New Directions. For alcohol I used Everclear from my local liquor store.

What do you mix with your favorite colognes? Do you mix them with Witch Hazel and just the aloe juice?

I usually eye ball it, but the rough amounts of my AS mix are:

3 parts generic witch hazel from Walmart
3 parts liquor (rum or vodka...they don't sell Everclear in MN)
1 part aloe vera juice (keep this in the refrigerator between uses)
5 or 6 drops glycerin
Cologne to taste (could also use EO's)

I mix this up in a 2 oz squirt bottle that once held hand sanitizer. Shake it up really well before each use. Go easy on the cologne as you can always add more if you need to. I use the small sprayable samples or decants and start with 3 or 4 squirts for the first use and have gone up to as many as 12 squirts before I was done.

I only mix up 2 ounces at a time so I can cycle through the different colognes more often.

I don't think there's anything particularly magical about these ratios. It's just what I came up with after reading many, many recipes online and decided what I wanted in an AS. This has served me VERY well and I use it liberally after each shave. It's VERY cheap!

I may experiment with more EO's rather than colognes on my next batch. I'd use Everclear if I could buy it here.

The cool thing about making your own AS is that you're only limited by your imagination. I encourage everyone to do this and make something that's uniquely yours.

lucky enough to have a local organic grocer who carries absolutely every essential oil imaginable. he's pricey, but again, has everything.
my local liquor store also stocks everclear FTW.
everything else gets sourced really easily from one of the internets.

I also stopped using EOs and just use a cologne to mix as follows.

i bought a 1oz glass atomiser from Wholefoods for $1.79

Add 20ml of Thayers Alcohol Free Unscented Witch Hazel
Add 5ml of Vodka (just for that little antiseptic effect. can add 10ml if you like a good burn)
Spray 10 squirts of my favorite cologne into the mix.

Shake well each time before use.

My current fav mix however is

2 parts Aqua Velva Ice Sport
2 parts Thayers Alcohol Free Unscented Witch Hazel
1 part Vodka

Thats my goto aftershave for a couple months now.
