What's new

information:001_huh:

Please forgive my ignorance....but having my merkur slant as my go to razor, and having previously used a lot of open combs - my question is did any manufacturer actually ever combine both principles? an oc slant? if so has anyone got any info on where I can get one as would love to try one if available....

Well, that would be like combining matter and anti-matter...the ensuing explosion would destroy the entire universe.

there is one. i've seen pictures floating around here somewhere. i believe it's bakelite. i'll post again if i find it.

Not long after joining B&B I thought I had come up with a revolutionary idea. An open comb TTO!! Wouldn't that be cool!! ...then I ran across a Senator in the BST and realized that it was invented long before my time.

And even longer than that. The Senator/Sheraton came about in 1938.

The 1934 Gillette Aristocrat, seen below, is an open comb TTO.

Have you used it? How does it compare to a standard slant?

Just got it and have not put it through its paces, but the original owner sold it because it was too aggressive for his tastes. Aggression combined with extreme light weight makes for a very tricky combination, since letting the weight of the razor do the work is not really an option. I do like my Merkur and Hoffritz slants and do not find them to be aggressive.

I own a Fasan open comb slant and find it to be an excellent razor. It can be a little pricey, but it provides an easy and excellent shave. I described my experience with it, and showed some detailed pictures, in this thread:

EDIT: Reading back, I was probably a little over-excited when posting that thread, but I do find it to be a good razor. It's a little more aggressive than I first thought--it can bite if I'm not careful--but it's still a good razor. I use it from time to time.

the metal one looks really interesting - if anyone has one they would be willing to sell I would love to hear about it....
