Inexpensive store-bought soap recommendations?

Next week I plan to invest in some AOS Lavendar shave soap, but I will run out of cream before then. Someone suggested a soap in another threat that I could buy from Wal-Mart that will do the job. However, are there any other inexpensive, enjoyable soaps, that others might suggest which I may buy in a drugstore like Walgreen's?

Planning on grabbing that tonight at Wal-Mart. I'm guessing that's my best bet. Also going to grab some Old Spice and see if I can get some Van Der Spice which seems to be so popular.

I went ahead and also ordered some Col. Conk's Bay Rum Glycerine soap off of Amazon. I thought about getting the Lime, but I've read more favorable comments on the Bay Rum. I loved the price too- $5.00

It's a good soap! My favorite is the almond. Smells so nice!

Well I'll have to order some of that then next week. I'd like to get a few soaps to choose from when I shave each day. I'll miss the Lavendar scent from my AOS shave cream though.

If you have a L'Occitane store nearby pick up a puck of their soap for $10. Much better than VDH/Conk. You can just put it into another container instead of buying their expensive metal bowl. Do not try microwaving the soap to melt it, that will ruin it. You can use a cheese grater to grate the soap into flakes if you can't find a container to fit it perfectly.

Instead of the Old Spice to mix in your VdH, go to Family Dollar and buy "Ivy Spice" aftershave. It smells like the old formula Old Spice, and only costs ~$1.60, as opposed to the $7 bottle of the "new" Old Spice.

I read somewhere that Old Spice Original Aftershave is the same as the original formula.

+1. Cheaper AND better! Can't beat it.

Unfortunately in the US, the # of traditional wet shaving products you can buy at the local drug store is very small.

VDH Deluxe is one of the few products widely available. It's also a pretty good soap, that never lets me down.

In creams, you can find Kiss My Face (natural foods stores), The Real Shaving Company (rite aid), and C.O. Bigelow (re-branded Proraso, available at Bath and Body Works).

You might be able to find Williams Mug Soap in your area too, but I have never been able to get acceptable results from it.

There's a Family Dollar across the street from work so I just ran over there to look for Ivy Spice. I want to be sure of what I get, even though it's just $1.70. I found "Ivy Club Aftershave: Spice Scent". Is this what I should be looking for?

I like Williams, though I know it's a lightning rod for some.

Yes, me too. I can understand that some people might not care for it, but don't understand the outright hostility toward it you see sometimes. Just Internet hyperbole I suppose.

But VdH and VdH deluxe are both good choices also.

It looks like this:

I am sure I could use the search feature but what is the process for making the spice soap? just melt it down and add a bit of the spice after shave?

I think that's it. I found a post that described it as a very simplistic task.

Would I be able to do the same thing with cologne I have like Grey Flannel? Is VDH completely unscented?

Both Van Der Hagen Deluxe and Williams Mug soaps should be easy to find at Wal-Mart and drug stores, and less than $2 each. The former should be almost impossible to mess up, while the latter takes a bit of skill, especially with hard water. It's worth trying Williams as an inexpensive way to find out if you're potentially one of those who "don't get" the more expensive Mitchell Wool Fat soap.
