I don't know how many truly dark Belgian beers I've had, if any. They tend to be complex in flavor, like wines, and sport a hefty alcohol content.
The bottle I had was nice. The beer is definitely lighter, and more delicate. Best in the world? Not at all, but it's nice to be able to try new and different things. The head, as you can see from Joel's pic is pretty airy, and there's a lot there, which isn't really my cup of tea. Still some good flavors though.AACJ said:

I am a Belgian Beer Fanatic, and DT isn't that great. You are better off seeking out the various Trappist & Abbey Ales out there, of which there are many fine examples.
I have to agree with Scotto. Many of these high end beers have very unique tastes that may not appeal to everyone. An example would be Rodenbach Grand Cru- you may love it or hate it.
I think that Westvleteren is about as good as it gets, but something along the lines of a Duvel might be a better starting point.

The Rodenbach is great. Makes a bad-*** carbonnade also if you like Belgian food. I am drinking a lot of St. Bernardus Ales (6/8/10/12), which are really nice. Also Westmalle Triple is dynamite. Finally, if you are a true fanatic like me, you must get into the lambics, like the great examples from F. Boon, etc.ouch said:

Hoegaarden Belgian White Beer... in the proper Hoegarrden glass (octagonal - poured in the manner described by the bottle - which is a bit interesting)
Amazing beer... has an almost tea like taste.

It is a wheat beer flavored with orange peel and coriander seed - thus the taste you are getting. Great stuff.
Last night featured my candidate for the best lager styled beer in the world (I know, I know- heresy for any avowed ale fan):

Definately one of my top 5's. From the whimsical plastic goat dangling from the neck of the bottle, to the extraordinarily deep, almost wine-like flavor, this one is top shelf all the way. It's the only non-ale to make it into my top 10. Worth seeking out.

I had an indulgence of the morning today. I know there are a few people on the board from the S.F. bay area, there's a place in San Ramon off of Crow Canyon called Mudd's, and they have a pretty good Sunday Brunch menu (and are pretty darn tasty all around). They have a nice big garden out back where they grow a lot of their own produce. I had Eggs Benedict with a Blood Orange hollandaise sauce, a bloody mary that was meaty, peppery, and flavorful (though it was lacking an appropriate garnish), and a very refreshing mojito. For the mojito, the bartender walked outside to snip some fresh mint from the garden. It was a nice touch, and very tasty.
