In your experience, which cartridge clogs the less?

I've recently followed with interest a thread on an Italian forum where an user did an endurance experiment with a Gillette Fusion. The cartridge lasted well over two months (with the jeans stropping technique) and provided excellent shaves.

That tingled my curiosity and I want to to replicate the trial. One of the worst memories I have from cartridge use was its clogging. I remember struggling to clean the cartridge under tons of water.

I don't have at hand any cartridge razor so i would have to buy a new one. Is the Schick Hydra that good or Gillette still reigns?
As the title says, which cartridge in your opinion clogs the less? Has the number of blades an influence or using proper, well hydrated shaving soap instead of canned foam helps in this matter?

I used a Schick Hydro 3 for several years until the replacements became hard to find here. I never had a problem with it clogging. I always though it was comparable to a Mach 3 but I could get the refills for less. For myself, any cartridge razor with more than three blades is too irritating for my skin. Using a proper shave soap or cream is always significantly better then using a canned foam for my face.

All of the dorco carts are difficult to clog, the back of the cart is completely open allowing lather and hair to flow through it. You'll still have to rinse it occasionally but much less then most other carts.

Which cartridge clogs the least? As I recall, the original Mach 3. As they added blades, they reduced the space between them and the clogging issue was exacerbated. That's just one of the reasons I returned to DE razors.

Schick makes (made?) a disposable razor that you pushed a button on the head and it would push out some of the clog so you could rinse it better. Another way is to use the little brushes from electric razors or even a toothbrush to clean between the blades. Doing this may help with whichever brand/model you choose.

I've never had a problem with clogging, but I've also never regularly used any cartridge more complex than some version of the Mach 3.

I also found that rinsing in water collected in the basin is far more effective and efficient than rinsing under running water.

These are very nice ideas thank you!
I am still undecided to go with a Fusion Proglide or a Schick Hydro 5. I'm not interested in the cost of the carts as I probably will use only the provided one, once the cartridge is over so is the experiment.

FWIW - Have not yet had a clogging problem with Sensor Excel, Mach 3, Fusion Proglide. Every few strokes swril the head in sink of hot water. Use canned gel, creams and soaps. The Harry's Razor takes an extra swirl to clear but hardly what I think is a clogging problem.

mach 3 was my cart until the last 5 years with DE. It has an open head design so water can flow through front to back.

The best carts I’ve used in terms of both a lack of clogging and performance are the Feather MR3 Neo and the newer F3 Samuari Edge carts.

They’re great bits of kit and are far better than the current offerings from Gillette and Schick/Wilkinson Sword.

As long as you don't try and shave a 4 or more day beard you should be fine, how would any cart clog with one or two days growth? Any more and than isn't there intended purpose. To prevent clogging with excessive growth? I use an injector for the first pass, or you could use a trimmer. I personally don't like trimmers.

I do shave every day now but You made me think that when I was still using cartridges I was shaving every 3 or 4 days. That could have been the reason for the clogging.
You have a very nice collection of Japanese cartridge razors, in your opinion how Kai compare with Feather? Is the Axia any good? As I can't find the old MR3 Neo that is not overly overpriced, is the new plasticky bulky model worth? I know it uses the same great cartridges but it is so ugly and I suspect uncomfortable to hold. Can the Samrai mount the MR3 cartridges? They are all "F-system" correct?

You know, I've spent the last two day reading about carts and I'm so very afraid to fall into the Japanese rabbit hole :a46:

It’s a hole I haven’t regretted falling down. [emoji106]

We’re lucky in the UK in that we ha a specialist vendor who sells Feather products so it’s easy to get access to the whole range.

All Feather carts use the F system so are all compatible with each other.

The new F3 looks ugly but performs very well (especially in head shaving). It’s one of the cases where spring-loaded gimmickry actually works as the results are a smooth and efficient shave.

The F3 blades aren’t as sharp as the MR3 Neo Blades (which utilises a wire guard system similar to Feather Guard AC blades and a strange rotating cylinder on the base of the cart itself instead of a lubricating strip) and are definitely worth a try if you can get hold of some cheaply.

Gillette Guard. One of the cheapest and no clogs. Haven’t used any other cartridge in a few years since finding the Guard.

Last week I purchased 20 Gillette Guards + 100 Cartridges for around $ 40 to resell locally. When they will arrive (I guess it will take 6-8 weeks from India) I will surely give them a try.
