What's new

in wall blade disposal cover plate.

Has anyone ever seen one? I vaguely remember seeing one in my grandparents washroom when I was young. I remember wondering why they had a square steel thing on the wall that said razorblades. It looked almost like a light switch cover but had a single slot for poking your old blades in. Has anyone else seen one of these? I wouldn't mind finding one and installing it in my bathroom. I would of course put something under it to catch the blades as they are put in. like a piece of PVC pipe capped at one end and fastened to the studs below the receptacle so i have enough room for 30 years of blades to pile up inside it.

I might be just completely imagining it as well.

Used to be in many houses. Many vanity mirrors also had a slit inside for the same purpose. If you do it, don't worry about the PVC tube. Just let the blades collect in the wall between the studs, they ain't hurtin' nobody ;)

You aren't imagining it. The vanity in my upstairs bathroom still has a blade slot (and unfortunately will be going away when I refinish that bathroom, old thing is rusty). If you want to make an easy one, you could use a blank electrical box and a blank face plate and cut a slit in it and cut a hole in the bottom of the electrical box. It would look nice and blades would still just fall between the studs.

I'm curious, it sounds like the blades dropped in such a thing would just be piling up inside the walls? That sounds dangerous to anyone who might have to do some remodeling or repair work on those walls...

Here are some images from some older threads.

I stayed at a hotel within the past two years, I can't recall exactly, but it was in Virginia on an anniversary trip my wife and I do to the states wineries. Anyway, since the hotel was old, maybe built in the early 1900's, it had a slot in the wall for blades. Needless to say, it was slam full! I could barely get blade in....but I did.

As a construction guy I can tell you I've found stranger and more dangerous things in walls and floors....

I Googled too and found an inquiry on a train fan forum for something like this, pulled from a Pullman train car. Very cool...

If someone is doing remodeling work without safety goggles, heavy leather gloves, and good sturdy boots, they will have a lot of other hazards to worry about during demolition. If the insert is marked to caution future inhabitants, that could save some worry and potential hazardous situations for future re modelers.

My house was built in 1953 and yes, the old medicine cabinet had a slot in it for razor blades. When I did the new bathroom over, I told the sheet rock workers about blades being in the old wall ,behind the cabinet.Sure enought they found a ton of them.

Needs milk and a bidet!
My vanity mirror has one. but I don't use it. I paid a buck for the blade bank on WCS and I plan to get my moneys worth! If I ever fill up the blade banks (i have 2) then i'll use the vanity slot for sure.

Somebody ALWAYS comes along and wrings their hands over this when the topic is brought up. Anybody doing repairs or remodeling who knows what they are doing knows how to deal with this. If not, you hired the wrong guy!

I have a couple of medicine cabinets with slots in this house.

Funny when I made the new shave den I did not put one in it. What was I thinking?!?!?!?!?!? Oh that's right. I filled the walls with insulation

Pick a likely spot and install a bill slot on the wall between the studs.
They come in Brass and Chrome and are used to push currency bills into the hold on gambling tables.
Run about 20 bucks.

I apologize for being concerned about the safety of others. As the years go by, I would guess less and less people will even know that these things existed, especially in newer areas where such things never existed.

I just use an old chicken broth can with a slot cut into the top.

Back then people were not as wimpy as they are today and also there were a lot fewer lawsuits.
