What's new

In praise of the Stahly wind-up.

Now that I know that my wind-up safety razor is a Stahly, I wanted to share my thoughts on it. I'd had it sitting around for quite a while before I gave it a try; probably because it is kind of odd-looking. You give the bottom of the handle a few twists and the thing vibrates as you shave. I found I needed to crank it up a couple of times to keep it purring along, but I was really impressed by how good a shave I got and how sure I felt that I was being protected from nicking myself somehow. The thing just felt really reassuring as it buzzed around my face and neck. So why isn't it my go-to shaver? I just didn't really like the feel of the big fat handle. I found myself longing for my Super Speed. So I'm keeping the Stahly on stand-by because if I'm in a big hurry I sometimes nick myself and from now on when I'm pressed for time I'm grabbing the Stahly. Also, it's just such a well-made and good-performing shaver and such an odd duck that I'm really becoming fond of it.

If you ever get a chance to try one of these, don't miss it. It's a truly unique and high-quality shaving experience.

I'm impressed you have one of those things in working condition, and doubly impressed that you had the tacks to actually used it. :w00t:

You might want to try out that high quality Stahly head on a normal handle like a common Bar handle or ball end Tech handle.
People get so caught up with the fat heavy wind up handle they over look what may be the finest head ever put on a 3 piece razor.
The round safety bars on the Stahly head are so smooth they feel like they're rolling on your face as you shave.
The Stahly head is part of my regular rotation.
The Stahly handle on the other handle is mounted with a Tech head and is part of my Odd Ball razor display.
