In a pinch: can of goo vs. regular soap

It looks like my shaving brush will be the first of my kit to arrive. As I will need a shave before the rest of the kit gets here, my options are either use my can of goo (Gillette shaving gel), or lather my brush up from some regular bar soap (Lever 2000).

What would you guys do in my situation?

In your situation, the best thing to do is to go down to Wal-Mart/ Wal-Greens and buy a puck of Van Der Hagen Deluxe (vdh) shaving soap for about $2.00.

I'd go with the goo...while it ain't ideal, I would have to say it beats lathering up with hand soap. The few times I've had to shave with regular soap it just left my skin incredibly dry.

I would go with the Lever 2000 (a fair moisturizing soap), a good brush, and shave in a hot shower. Having had the opportunity to shave in cold water on more than one occasion, I can attest that hot water is better. Of course, I know that P-38's and P-51's are really can openers and not airplanes.

Between those two choices, I'd go with the goo. On the other hand, in my prior life (pre-B&B), I got a decent shave with a bar of neutrogena glycerin soap (hey, it was an emergency).

Unfortunately, the only thing I have spotted at my local drug stores is Williams (and it's overpriced to boot). Looks like most of you are saying to use the goo.

You do have another option: wait until the rest of your kit arrives, ensuring that you have the most enjoyable DE shave possible.

Unfortunately, the rest of my kit won't arrive for awhile. Still waiting on responses from forum members in the B/S/T here and at TSD for getting a razor. It's already been a few days since my last shave with my MBM.

How in the heck do you overprice Williams? Do they want two dollars for it?

Williams isn't as bad as it's made out to be here on B&B.

Just follow a few steps....
  1. Pour a little hot water on the puck, perhaps a tablespoon
  2. Let that sit while you take your shower and let your brush soak
  3. Pour the water from the puck (if any) in to you lathering bowl, or if face lathering, just leave it
  4. With a shaken out brush, swirl and pump for about thirty seconds
  5. Put down brush, use your canned goo (just kidding!)
  6. Move to your bowl or face lather
  7. Let lather sit on face for two minutes, then shave

You could use the Williams and get good results...plus, when you get another product like Tabac, Cella or PC, you'll be a lathering champ. Learning on Williams is like taking a few cuts with the weights on the bat before stepping up to the plate. :001_rolle

Whatever you choose, Williams or your canned stuff, leave it on your beard for two minutes, then relather if needed and go to town. Leaving the product on your beard for a couple minutes lets the lather do the work of softening your beard effectively.

My face is so sensitive to canned goo that I'll eagerly use hand soap in a pinch if there is no other shaving soap available.

I vote for giving the Lever 2000 a try. It has tallow as the 1st ingredient :w00t:

If you have to get something before the rest of your kit comes in, I'd just buy a can of Barbasol. Those Gillette gels are over-priced.

Given the choice between Lever2000 and blue goo, I'd pick up my wife's hair conditioner and use that instead.

+1 ==== I have often used conditioner as a brushless....Try it, and if you dont like it use goo..or add some goo on top of the conditioner....

If you choose canned goo give the Aveeno a try (walmart or target) - I used it exlusively for the last 2 years of my mach 3 days and it really did help.

Also, see if you have a Bath & Body Works nearby - they have CO Bigelow/Proraso shaving cream which is top notch stuff.

There is much more to a good shaving soap that just tallow. Most bath soaps would seem to be too drying to the skin, and hence not ideal for shaving.

+1 to both suggestions. Aveeno is very likely the best canned goo available, and C.O. Bigelow/ Proraso is a must have in every den!!

If you have a local store that sells Kiss My Face creams, you could grab a tube or bottle of that. It's a great option to have in the cabinet for the times when you can't brush shave (and it works well when you can use a brush, too).
