Importing pipe tobacco into Australia

Greetings folks,
have just joined the group, and look forward to actively participating.

The cost of pipe tobacco (if you can get some!) here in Australia is []{}#%^% ridiculous. For the past 30 odd years I have been traveling internationally on a very regular basis, and kept my supply of 'baccy going by purchasing at the duty free shops around the world. Never had to buy any locally so I was not prepared for the price here.

Having now reached retirement age, i have no reason for any international travel. In fact my last international trip was Aug 2012 and I got caught by the change in duty free allowance of tobacco (used to be 200 gm, changed to 50 gm over the weekend that I returned to this country).

Are there any other Ozzie pipe smokers in this forum, that can advise me how to maintain a supply of pipe tobacco without these horrendous prices ($52 for a 50gm satchel of "inferior" aromatic).

Or do I just give up.

Cheers

You people are really lucky. I wish I could get baccy for that cheap.
Well if you import it that way you can have it cheap too... but I have to really like stuff to go to the B&M to pick it up. The government does make it hard to support local business.

Shipping ruins almost any savings, and then if customs find the order I am taxed heavily. Anything over $20 gets taxed. So can't order a lot of baccy in one go.

I am in Canada, where pipe tobacco runs about $1/gram, so I feel your pain. 4Noggins is good for here, but I am not sure how harsh Aus is on incoming mails.
