My exploding razor knows secrets
I have never subscribed to any shaving Youtuber.
But when I'm dying to learn about razors, I dig through every discussion thread and Youtube video I can find, even if it's in Italian or Russian.

Finally, I admit that I occasionally stop by Youtube videos of beautiful women using razors (including female barbers), much more attractive than those half-naked men talking about lawn mowers during SOTD.

Why don't we have a dislike button here?

There used to be a few guys on YouTube who were knowledgeable and they were willing to provide honest reviews of products, even if those reviews were negative. Unfortunately, they are no longer producing videos; I do not know the reasons for their departure. There might still be some like this who are still making videos, but they are few and far between.

Many of the guys today make videos to showcase products they promote. In some cases like videos from West Coast Shaving and Razor Emporium, the promotion is obvious. I remember watching one video by Anthony Esposito in which he listed his top 10 shave brushes. All 10 of them were Savile Row brushes with different handles. While I do have a Savile Row brush and consider it to be one of my best, it was quite obvious that the top-ten review was completely biased.

Many video producers will never make a negative comment about any product they review. They are scared that their supply of free items from suppliers will be discontinued if they make negative remarks. That type of video is less than helpful for those trying to make a well informed decision on purchasing the product. I do not make videos, but when I do review products, they are products I have purchased with my own money.

The guys that really bug me are the ones who sound like some of the infomercials on late night TV. Every thing is overhyped in the videos. I quickly hit the pause button on these.

If you do a search for shaving videos, it seems like many of them these days have nothing to do with traditional wet shaving, but are for shaving body hair, shaving armpits, and "shaving down there". That is the society we now live in, for better or worse.
Cut and Paste is an Australian forum. Reviewer Errol does not do videos but his about 100 razor reviews are detailed and he does not shy away from panning some expensive razors.

You mean Paste and Cut, yes Errol is an outstanding razor reviewer, he’s very knowledgeable in details.

You guys really need to check Errol reviews from Paste and Cut in the safety razor topic section.

You are reviewing a tool that's meant to shave and you've got no hair to shave off for the demo?
Great input, @LRod -- I'm with you much of the way...!

I have an addition to your list:
--straight-razor expert sporting a goatee ... :)

Anyone who has seriously attempted to master a straight, will know that the facial area just around where the goatee is, is by far the hardest to shave with a straight. One soon begins to wonder why so many straight razor Youtubers seem to be sporting goatees .... My conclusion is, it's hardly a coincidence. On the other hand, its quite hilarious.

And this brings me to a more general point about Youtube shaving videos:
there can be many routes into watching them, and motivations for watching can change. For my part, I do watch them to learn, and "see", as you point out.
But I also watch them for fun! It's a kind of kitchy entertainment and silent protest for me. Rather than be watching endless streams of nonsense mainstream "News" by journalists without much talent, and similar "shows" by professional show bizz, I like to instead commit my time and attention to humble amateurs fooling around in public with something as absurd as they shaving habits, letting anyone into their private bathrooms...! I am sure a variety of mainstream media "experts" would be gobsmacked and alarmed ... indeed they should be..!!
Meanwhile, I like to have some plain fun -- the more brainless, the better -- , and if I also get one or two tips to enrich my own passion for shaving once in a while, great!

FYI, I have previously participated in a related B&B discussion where I labored this some of these perspectives further:

I'm not into straight razors so I haven't seen any of those videos. I'm going to have to check them out though. Sounds like the same type of shenanigans on that side of the shaving spectrum. I'll read through that other thread you posted as well.

I quickly glanced through that thread and I also participated, Lol!!
I had forgotten about it!

I watched a few. I was trying other soaps to maybe up my game. For the life of me I don't understand scented soaps. The scent doesn't last much past the rinse and some of these guys have 20 jars of the same soap in different scents, and then they use a matching after shave splash to "enhance" the soap scent. Why not buy a jar of unscented soap and then various aftershaves? Honestly their logic is illogical. I guess you can splurge when you aren't the person paying for it.

-They have no whiskers to shave (probably one the things that bother me the most). You are reviewing a tool that's meant to shave and you've got no hair to shave off for the demo?
TOTALLY AGREE! Too funny. It kind of grosses me out to see them scraping a face that looks like a raw block of tofu. Some of these guys' faces are still red with irritation from their previous 10 shaves earlier in the day.

 As opposed to...useful videos? I gave up on these almost as soon as I started watching them. 1) watching someone else shave is just gross; 2) it's nearly impossible to not get somewhere between a good and great shave using a new blade or cartridge of any kind with minimally competent technique against 2-3 day's growth; 3) as others have mentioned, people start doing these for attention followed hopefully by pecuniary rewards so they're inherently compromised. Between that and the fact that any conclusion, opinion or "rating" they draw is based on one shave with no account for variables makes the video have little if any informational value. But the videos draw views and comments from people who gain validation from seeing their favorite products mentioned and a cheap "celebrity" rush from an author response to a comment they leave. This is why fragrance rating videos are as inexplicably popular as they are useless. But advertisers see that easily swayed audience and the comps and such theoretically then start rolling in to the author.

Now, if these videos were instructive rather than editorial, that could be a different story. And there may be genuinely entertaining people who simply use shaving as a subject vehicle for their commentary, information, humor or creativity, and they could just as easily be making radish rosettes instead for all that matters, but I've never seen that.

I watched mantic59's videos when I was first starting out, he gave great explanations of things that might not be obvious from just reading text. There was also a French guy who would video himself straight shaving and he was amazing. No commentary, used a teeny brush and cup, probably whatever soap was on hand, and just went to town. I learned a lot more about straight shaving from that than any influencers or reviewers. I also learned that I'll never be as good as he is :).
