Identify my dad's old razor (Gillette)

Hi, I am new here and I was thinking of taking up the safety razor over the Mach 3 I am using at the moment. Hence I remembered my dad's old razor which was sitting in bathroom's cabinet for ages.

Here are some pictures of my dad's old razor. He had passed away 5 years ago so I don't know how long he has been using it for but I can remember him using it as far as back to when I was a kid. I would say maybe 30+ years.

I have just cleaned it up using toothbrush and soap, you can see that it is still not exactly clean! 'Made in England' and 'Gillette' are on the underside of the razor but I don't know what it is and how old it is.

Do you think it is good enough to use again?

Much appreciated

Gary

It's a Knack (late 1960s early 1970s vintage) - handle is discoloured from the original white. Head looks in ok shape and will probably respond well to some TLC with something like Duraglit/Silvo/Goddard's Silver Dip.

Handle - not sure what to prescribe.

Thanks, just read up some quick info about it. It seems to be a good shaver, I don't mind the handle as long as the head is in good condition.

What is TLC by the way?

what is TLC by the way?

Tender Loving Care.

It should be possible to lift the handle from it's current situation - typical standbys to use on it would be bicarbonate of soda (mixed to a paste) - try it on a small part - it can draw out a lot of discolouration.

Thanks for all the replies! Didn't get round to taking the photo of it until now...

After I have cleaned it up and polished it, the head isn't in good shape so it can't be used then? Here is a picture attached -

If thats the case then I might buy a Merkur 38C razor, although I might try out a cheapo Wilkinson Classic razor first.

The head is not very worned, just a small nick...You should see one i own, all the corners are orange because it was so intensely used the cooper/brass alloy under the plating is exposed and the corners are round as if it was passed on sandpaper!!

But i think yours will perform nicely..Mine stills. But maybe other opinions will help...i've seen some BBers fellows here saying it could irritate and drag some whiskers when the plating is gone or in similar situations.

I would think that it'd be fine to shave with. There doesn't appear to be any structural damage, just superficial cosmetic blemishes. But, there's only one way to tell for sure: put a blade in that baby and take 'er for a spin!

Thanks, I will try it on with tesco's blades. Also I will buy Wilkinson Classic razor which comes with 5 blades so I will do some experiments. :001_smile

Hi mate,

Depending on what the handles made of, you can use:

Bone/Ivory: Milk on cotton wool.

Plastic: either some bicarb or even a dab of diluted cream cleaner or a hint of shower cleaning spray and wash it thoroughly after use.

There other ways, just google cleaning white plastic/Bone/Ivory etc. etc. :)

ATB,
Tom
