I picked up a razor on ebay and wanted to pick the brains of the learned members of the forum.
Is this a 40's razor in a 50's case and does it look like a superspeed or a milord?
Also as a side note what is the difference between a superspeed and a milord?
Thanks for looking.

Yes, a 40's Superspeed, case may or may not be correct. They made both razor and case in the beginning of the 50's. We can't see the date code on the razor.

Here is a Milord - 47

Here is a 40's Superspeed -47

Note the difference in color and in width of the band between the handle and knob.

Alan,
this set is correct. Your razor should have a date code with a letter "Y".
This is the latest of Super-Speed 40's style in the correct dark blue case with typical stress-lines to the clear lid.
Only the blade dispenser isn't okay. Very nice and also very rare piece.

Hi, I have the same type & color, and condition with the crazing case, but it was found around a W-3 Black Tip - still the right case?

It's also correct.
Here is a Black Tip of my colletion; date coded W-3 (1951).
I think the latest models of Super-Speed were completed with the dark blue cases.
Then came the other colored boxes in 1955: light blue for Light, cream for Regular (Flare Tip) and maroon for Heavy.
(Note: exclusively in 1954 was the Flare Tip comleted with a red & clear case)

Wow, thanks Leon, mine is W-3 also which (don't tell anyone) is birth year/quarter :)

I have both the Aluminum & a Steel W-3 Black Tip - must have been a busy quarter at Gillette

Wow I did better then I thought!
I'm not really a collector (thats not what the wife says) I just wanted a ss and saw this 1.
I almost feel like it shouldn't go into the rotation.
I will try to get my camera working and post some better pics.
Thanks for clearing this up for me Leon!
