Ideal finishing hone

Bar the japanese stones they cost a fortune so i won't be having one of those for a while.

Im thinking a naniwa 12k shapton gs 16k or thuringian which reportedly are getting lighter so are closer to being like an escher stone.

Which would you pick, are they right in saying that a coti isn't ideal to work with the thuringian?

Already have one and it's sloooow thanks though.

Money isn't tight i just can't justify spending £300 plus on a finishing hone atm hence why i mentioned it. :wink2:

Charnley forest?

Well i'll keep an eye out, anyway i've fired an email to a second hand tool supplier to see if he knows of any devonshire oil stones, seeing as im not that far away that'll be a nice find.

My Japanese naturals notwithstanding, the Naniwa 10K is my go to finisher. It is made such that you can create a "mud" and go through several cycles of honing on it so that you end up with a very sharp, very smooth edge. Really, I can't say enough good things about this hone.

Well i do have a naniwa 5k and love it to bits.

Any idea what stone this is?

I've been having really good success with my Nani12k, under $100, and way faster than The People's Hone (Chinese12K)
I was thinking about adding the nani10K to my progression, but my new (to me) vintage thuringian seems to have taken that place.

Thanks for the suggestions and mentioning srd, the price is a fair bit keener over there, so i went for the shapton 16k gs, i have a devils tongue which lapped fine should be around 10k, then again i have my coti and other stones. I'll see what works best in my progression.

It was that or the naniwa, but the higher grit won me over. :tongue_sm

That and srd stocks thayers, and i threw some jeris musk in there, for the hell of it.

i have the 10k naniwa. i can do all the honing with coticule from slurry to plain water. i have added just five laps on 10k and it easily makes up for any keeness you have missed on the coticule. i then follow with coticule once again to leave the natural edge. Its a great conbination. Depending how much keeness you need to make up, you may need as many as 40 laps on 10k. I did 27 laps one particular time just to see the differance the razor was so sharp but to sharp for my skin the coti soon toned it down.
