I have seen some people mull over the idea of giving a vintage Gillette in a starters set gift for Christmas. I don't doubt that a newer razor may be better as a lot of people seemed to think, let them get obsessed and buy the vintages after they don't think old stuff is gross.
I had an idea though because
1. I think Gillettes can be great for a newbie and
2. They seem to be the best quality razors without spending a ton of money, even AFTER being used or what not.
So why not a Gillette replate? I guess some may cost a little too much, but some seem to be only a tad more for a full replated Gillette. Having not played with many myself I'm not sure how close to new some of them look (maybe on some you can tell from the plating it might have blemishes?). I'd have to think something replated would be more desirable than just one scrubbed with soap.
Even if it's not for a young kid, I still think replating the razor sort of makes it a bit more acceptable as a general gift vs one that looks used and would only impress someone who is really into wet shaving.
