Idea for Christmas gifts for the "younger ones"

I have seen some people mull over the idea of giving a vintage Gillette in a starters set gift for Christmas. I don't doubt that a newer razor may be better as a lot of people seemed to think, let them get obsessed and buy the vintages after they don't think old stuff is gross.

I had an idea though because
1. I think Gillettes can be great for a newbie and
2. They seem to be the best quality razors without spending a ton of money, even AFTER being used or what not.

So why not a Gillette replate? I guess some may cost a little too much, but some seem to be only a tad more for a full replated Gillette. Having not played with many myself I'm not sure how close to new some of them look (maybe on some you can tell from the plating it might have blemishes?). I'd have to think something replated would be more desirable than just one scrubbed with soap.

Even if it's not for a young kid, I still think replating the razor sort of makes it a bit more acceptable as a general gift vs one that looks used and would only impress someone who is really into wet shaving.

I like the idea. A good source for reasonably priced nickel replates is Krona Kruiser. Not only does he have a guy that does replates well, he also sells ones already plated for a good price.

What's it cost to get a razor replated? I've avoided a few razors because they look their age. I think a replated razor with some sort of made up certificate and a brief history of the razor would be neat. Something that looks new but has history.

That would be a great gift.

See! Check out Krona Kruiser or others, there are tons of replates if you look. The crazy part is that I just don't remember them being this cheap. For less than a Merkur it seems like you can get a nice replate.

If you're very against used razors just ask about the condition, I think sometimes you can feel some blemishes, but I'm not sure, there are a few members I believe who have done replating. I just thought of it while thinking of how to give a vintage Gillette as a gift without the gift looking 100 years old :)

I don't know how much it costs to replate, although I would just look at the Hobbyist Forum, there is at least one big post full of replates right now. If anyone knows of businesses or other members, maybe you can post them here, I think there are a few methods of replating, so I am guessing it probably all varies a bit.

The made-up certificate and brief history is interesting. I think maybe getting some of those old old adverts would be neat. Say you gift a Slim, you can look for an advert for the Slim (with the same date would be awesome, but difficult). That is a pretty cool idea, unfortunately most boxes are lost, I guess with some creativity and some old ads/articles you could probably make an interesting package at least! I think some people may be pretty curious about all the prices, the articles and such that came out the same time the razor did. If they are younger, that's probably even cooler (I guess this depends on the person, but I figure if it's replated then you could probably highlight how old the razor is without people being turned off as much by how it's been "used").

I didn't want to link just one person, here is an active post:

And I'm pretty sure Rudy Vey (http://www.ultimatependesigns.com/) does some plating, I just haven't seen posts about it recently. I'm sure he can answer questions, it seems like Rudy plates pens, but I seem to recall seeing razors he posted a while back.

If anyone knows more, please help add to the list, I just wanted more than one link so hopefully anyone interested can see the options available.
