What's new

ID: Need some info/help on this razor please! [PIC]

Greetings gents,

While I'm a regular fixture in the DE forum and DE use, I've had a desire to get a straight for a while to play with. I'm a big lover of vintage gear, so I'd prefer old quality over new.

I came across this razor in the wild today and I was hoping I good get some info on it from some of you folks who are in the know. Any dating info? Also, what price range is fair for such a blade? I have the ability to rescale myself and connections for honing.

Thanks guys!

Looks like a nice razor, "The Highly Popular" Kohinoor, made in Sheffield, England.

Are the scales straight, I would try to salvage them if possible.

I would say the razor is from 1880-1920, but that is just a guess.

Its value is what someone is willing to pay.

Thanks Mike, The scales are quite straight and may be salvageable. If I get it I'll keep that in mind.

I hear you on the value - I was just hoping to learn what a fair market value assessment would be for this particular razor in general. Prices are all over the place these days in the DE community - I expect it's the same in the straight world if not more so.

I like the looks of this razor. I'd like to buy it, but I don't want to overpay as I'm definitely not short of shaving utensils :001_rolle

What's a fair price? What's a bargain? What's a "move on and look for another" price?

I'd guess this razor would go for minimum $50 on ebay, possibly up to even 60-70 if the scales are still good. Depends on how big is the blade as well? If its bigger than 7/8 than even more ;)

That's my own very wild guess though... (plus I think on ebay canada we often pay more than on ebay us).

He's asking in the $100 clams region. Seems high to me.

Blade was very big and heavy. Actually why I'm checking it out. I've passed over dozens of straights in my travels as a DE collector, but have always thought a nice BIG barber's notch might be nice to have.

Well, if its 8/8 or bigger, its priced in the range of what you'll find on ebay I'd say. Prices seem to follow an exponential curve with the blade size (and barber's notch just look good).

As someone else mentioned though, its worth what you're willing to pay for it ;) All nice & cleaned up this would make for a nice chopper, although some of the writing on the shank seems quite faded away.

Edit: You could always buy a brand new Dovo for $100! haha ;) Seems not so long ago I was actually considering buying one as a first razor. It pales in comparison to that big blade.

When you find the one(s) you really want money won't matter quite so much. Every collector has weak spots and maybe one of yours is big wedgy-to-half-hollow Sheffields with barber notches.

Yeah I might go for that. Make him an offer and see what he says...

Hard to tell on that pic, looks like 7/8 to 15/16. Blade should clean up nicely. Scales appear horn. Can be made to look like new as long as they are not cracked.

Appears to have some hone wear or might just be the pic. I say $100 is about right.
