Ice Tea help using loose tea.

I like Ice tea and drink it all day long. I make it in a a gallon jug. I currently am using Lipton Green tea. I put five tea bags in to the jug. I than fill it with about 1/2 of hot water from my hot water dispenser. Let it brew for a while and then remove the bags and fill it the rest of the way with water. I drink it plain with ice. I would like to start using loose tea instead of the bags. I have a Teavana perfect teamaker. I currently use this in the morning to make Iced Yerba Mate tea and I like it a lot. I went to the Teavana store and to be honest they are nice but the store intimidates me. They sold me Dragonwell green tea, which ok but not what I am looking for. Any suggestions on a loose tea that is similar to Lipton Green tea. Thank you.

Can you get Dilmah green tea where you are? I use that for ice tea, and it is very nice. Drinking some right now, actually.

lipton green is likely a japanese style green so bancha most likely. you can the cheaper stuff from supermarkets in like 1kg bags. for like $10 or something.

Chinese gunpowder green. Cheap and tasty and great for what you are trying to do. You can even make a pot and then pour it, by the glass, filled with ice and top with cold water. This is what I do sometimes, but I usually use black teas when I am in the mood for iced tea.

*edit* Brew the gunpowder green with some fresh mint in it, ice, sweeten and you have a Moroccan style iced tea.

The teavana near me sells plain green tea that is comparable to lipton's green tea just stronger. Just go in and ask for green tea.

Stopped by a couple of supermarkets and the only loose tea is either Yerba Mate and a Lipton one. I will have to check more on the web.

There are a number of internet sites. I might also suggest you check out fellow member @netsurfr website at jas-etea.com.

If you have any Chinese/Asian groceries in your area, you should also check them out, they usually have more variety than your average grocery store. One store in my area sold large bags, holding maybe 1-2 gallons of green tea leaves in plain, clear bags. I imagined it was targeted for families which drink it all day long...I did not try it so I can not comment on it.

I usually have black tea instead of green. For that quantity, I would add the juice of 1 lemon and serve it with ice. It's a winner during the summer!
