What's new

I will not abandon you, dear beat-up Popular!

Ok, so this 1939 Gillette Popular has seen some action in its 81 year lifetime!

I acquired it because it came with the rare-ish original #46 white bakelite case in good condition and with both(!) white bakelite bladeholders. And because I had a hunch.

The faults are obvious: Plating is 100% shut, verdigris is prevalent, and on arrival it even turned out to have a dropped knob (seller was open albeit non-descriptive about it being faulty). But on the other hand ... it tightens up perfectly, seems well aligned with all teeth perfectly straight, and it seems like it is not pitted at all anywhere.

So I conferred with Chris Evatt and he thinks it is a perfect candidate for a replate! - Learning: Never give up hope.

Watch this space, I will post the ‘after’ pictures once Chris and Cap have done their wonders!

I'm really looking forward to seeing this one restored, I love my Popular. Thanks for taking this one on, and for keeping us in the loop on the restoration!

Those "projects" are always fun, aren't they, Peter! For what it's worth, I've never had a Popular that DIDN'T have a dropped knob, made me wonder if they were supposed to be that way...

Great find and thanks for caring. No Popular should never be left behind!

Good luck on the restauration.

Thanks again, fellas. And more great news: Captain Murphy confirmed Chris Evatt’s and my assessment - this is a fine razor - or will be, once the experts have done their magic.

It’ll probably be a couple of months before I can report in with the final result, as the mechanical and plating refurbishments involve quite a bit of logistics including trans-Atlantic shipping!

@Jim: You are so right, sir!

As I recall, the Popular and Sheraton have different heads — the Popular is like the First Gen Aristocrat (crimped center bar) and the Sheraton has neither the crimp nor any notch on the center bar. The Sheraton head is like the Senator and the British ‘Pre-#15’ Aristocrat.

Update from Captain Murphy: The Popular is going through the initial stages of resurrection. Just look at how it now looks in its rough brass - isn’t that an awesome sight?! Next step will be replating in 24K gold by Chris Evatt, then back to Cap for being put together again!

Check out the ‘before’ picture first!

Way to go, Peter — way to restore the beauty of the past.
