What's new

I was looking at Rudy Vey's Brush website..

And I am sort of torn as to which one to get. This will be my first time using a brush and soap. I don't plan on buying another brush if this one is good. I know that the more expensive the brush, the better it will probably be, yet I would still like some tips to help me pick the brush of my dreams. Thanks guys.

Just PM Rudy (he's a member here), give him some basics and ask for his opinion. He's just a super guy and a joy to work with. I can guarantee both his work and his honesty and expertise. You can't do better.

Email or call Rudy and explain to him your situation. He'll likely ask you a bunch of questions (soaps or creams, bowl or face lather, etc.) and can customize something to your current set of preferences or build you something that will likely work across options. Don't be surprised, however, if your tastes change over time. I've tried quite a few different brushes and I'm still experimenting.

Well, I will do that but was hoping to get a recommendation from one of you guys. I was planning on just purchasing a soap and bowl. I will prob build the lather in a separate bowl. Hope the additional info helps.

Price has almost nothing to do with brush quality in functional terms - I shave with an $8 brush almost every day, and get great shaves. Check around the boards here, there are plenty of fantastic brushes in the sub-$40 range.

With Rudy, you're getting hand-crafted artisanal brushes of the highest quality, and if that's what you want you won't go wrong with him. Just don't think you HAVE to spend big bucks to get a long lasting quality brush.

Well, I sent Rudy a PM. I am basically wondering how much better the Silvertip badger is than the Finest badger and how much better the Finest badger is than his Shavemac model and the UK pure badger model. I know this post is pretty confusing and I feel bad about that.

None of them are 'better', they're all just 'different'.
You're going to need to narrow down what you want from a brush before he can really help you choose.

no need to feel bad in the least.

Because most of our opinions are just that ours; it's tough to say which is going to be best for you.

For instance, i spent a lot of time searching for my first brush. i bought it and immediately knew it wasn't what i was looking for OR what i was reading about here. I traded it out and got something different... that's when i realized what a rabbit hole i just jumped into.

A finest shave brush is excellent. a Super is also excellent... however for me a Pure shaving brush may be one of my favorites.

Lately I've been liking the firmer and cheaper Black Badger knots that Tony sells.
At $13.95 for a 22mm knot it's a bargain.
This Argentine Lignum Vitae brush has replaced my sliver tip as my everyday brush.

First of all, no matter how amazing this brush may be, it will be your first brush. You may keep it for a long, long time, but it will not be the only one. Trust me.

Second of all, as a Rudy customer, let me assure you that he can blindfold his eyes, grab a random hunk of wood, a random knot, and a random tool and make you something ridiculously good. And if he does none of those things, you're in for an even better ride .

It seems like others are a bit reluctant to post definitive opinions, so I'll give you some of mine. Go for the Finest knot. It's a great all-around performer. Tears up soaps and creams alike; not too soft, not too stiff. I'm a fan of bulb shapes, you may like fans. See what he has on hand.

Handle material is all up to you. He can do classics, he can do exotics, whatever you want. You'll want to at least give him a few ideas, I think, so he can start somewhere. I went exotic (Tasmanian myrtle) to match one of my wife's jewelry boxes. And, surprise surprise, it turned out amazing.

Handle shape is something that'll take time for you to learn whether you really like, but he has some great suggestions depending on the material. The classic vase (Persian jar) shape is...well, classic, and a great all-around grip. I'm a fan, at least.

Lastly, here's some eye candy for you: my baby.

+1 on PM'ing Rudy, I chatted with him a while back, just let him know its your first brush and what you would like out of it, after a lil Q&A youl have yourself a badass little brush! :thumbup1:

I am honestly not looking for him to make a custom one for me. I see that he has a bunch of pre-designed ones on his site. I just want to pick one of those.

:w00t: That's a nice brush, man! Looks like a soap eater.

I don't personally own a Rudy Vey brush, but I can attest to the TGN knots he uses, and his craftsmanship and reputation are both obvious and well-earned. Suffice it to say, you won't be disappointed.

I actually contacted him about some of his ready made brushes. I don't really need a custom brush at this point in time. He will let me know tonight what he has in stock.

 That is a spectacularly beautiful, work of art.
I am so envious and it has me designing my den to showcase brushes like that.
