What's new

I want a stainless handle to fit my 1930's "New"

Hi All!
I've recently bought an old 1930's "New" razor and I love it.
I used the razor with a Feather blade this morning and had a great shave. This head has got to be one of my favorites.
The thing is, I would like to use it with one of my heavier stainless handles.
I own a Weber Bulldog handle, an Ikon Bulldog II handle and an ATT Atlas handle, but none of them will fit because of their diameters.
I suppose I could put a couple of washers on the threaded part of the head to pack it up, but that would be a pain every time I wanted to change the blade.
If I can get over the problem, then I shall get this head replated in chrome.
Any ideas please?

I seem to remember reading someone using a dremel and grinding away some of the metal on the head so that they could use multiple handles. If you're going to get it replated, you could make it look pretty good If I can find where I saw this, I'll post it.

EDIT: Found this, although I don't think it will give you definitive proof that it will work on yours ( especially if there's two different measurements on the head )

If memory serves correctly, the NEW handles have two different diameters where they meet the head. Another member reported 8mm and 10mm. The notch in the bottom plate is sized accordingly.

Knowing which one you have will help you to find a solution.

Not sure if it's the same one but my New LC is Made in Canada and the back of the razor looks similar to yours. I use a UFO Kaiser stainless steel handle and it fits perfectly. Sorry I don't have a picture right now of the back of the razor. I used to have a weber bulldog but I don't remember if I ever tried using the handle with this.

There are 2 different size for the NEW head. I had a small one at one stage when, many moons ago, I bought a BullMastiff handle. The new handle did not fit the head properly. What Bob suggested was to either reduce the diameter of the handle where it connects for the head or to enlarge the head from the small size to a bigger size. I had the handle modified as it was easier but Bob seemed to say that when he was buying NEW heads in bulk, he would enlarge the diameter when it was a small one and replate them. I got no idea what he used (Dremel, drill, something else) but he seemed to do it on a regular basis.

The issue now is that Bob is not with us anymore, unfortunately.

While I do have a couple of the NEW LC heads with the larger handle cutout, I just decided to grind down my iKON handle to a narrower diameter at the top. It didn't need much grinding to fit. You do need to be careful to only grind on the side, and not distort the flatness of the top of the handle. As mentioned, I think the UFO handles all have a sufficiently narrow neck to fit the smaller cutout NEW LC's.

Wow glad I read this. I have a NEW on the way and was thinking of buying an ikon bulldog 2, but now I'm worried about thw fit. :-(

I made a solid stainless Gillette copy for mine. Unfortunately the work involved was too much to sell them for any reasonable price.

I can reduce the top diameter of any or all of your handles if not plated. Maybe someone else here can advise if this is the case for yours)
If you're interested and would pay just the signed-for post PM me. I'm just a bit up the road in Leicester :biggrin1:.
When I get my camera sorted tomorrow I'll PM a few other options you may be interested in.

putting a small washer over the thread is the only non permanent solution to use your current handles i'd have thought.

i've only got one of those US style base plate NEW's that i use with a UFO Kaiser Short handle, my others are English flat bottom or English twin slot base plates that dont have any problems.

maybe pick up a different type of NEW LC
