What's new

I think I've become a slantbar convert

I've always had a tough beard that requires a more aggressive shave. As many have done here, I decided to take the R41 plunge. The R41 is a great razor, but IME, to get a really good shave with it (i.e., little burn and little blood but yet still close) requires the patience and adroitness of a surgeon. That's great on the weekends, but putting that much effort into a shave in the morning when I'm still waking up and on a time table is problematic. Even with solid technique, I find that I still need the styptic pencil handy with the R41.

I wondered if there was anything that could get similar closeness with less hassle and blood. I decided to try out a slantbar. I ordered a Merkur from Connaught. The wait killed me, but I knew that I would save a few dollars having something shipped from England. It arrived yesterday and I tried it out this morning.

Wow! Even with one shave, it left me really impressed. I loaded up an Astra. I did my WTG pass. For me, WTG is really just to get as much hair as possible before doing something more aggressive. I need at least one ATG pass for a good shave. After my WTG pass, I thought, "Okay." Then I went ATG. My face went from :biggrin1: to :001_cool: to . It was the smoothest shave I've ever had in my life. I was astounded at how fast I could shave with the slant and yet still get an exceedingly close shave. It was like driving a sportscar with the best suspension money can buy. Not once was there any pull or drag, which often happens on my chin. While I could always get my sideburns and above my lip BBS, my chin can be pretty problematic. The slant slayed the mighty whiskers.

Hopefully this isn't a "new razor honeymoon phase," but I'm really excited about this razor. I didn't realize that something could be so aggressive yet smooth at the same time.

Hi Liquidmidnight: Glad that you are loving the slant. I get some incredible BBS with mine (37C & 37G).

WARHAWK

I have the 37C and it shaves like a dream every time, and I would personally describe it more as efficient than aggressive.

When I went off on a 3 month vacation I took 2 razors. One was the 37c short handle slant. This says what I think about that razor as I had a LOT of choices and the slant was the first pick to go into the DOPP.

They were sold out of the 37c at the time I ordered, so I went with the 39c. I have a 34c and I really dig the short handle, so I was wondering if I'd get on with the longer handle. I actually found it quite comfortable and balanced.

One thing I noticed is that it is a bit difficult to surmise if you've put the blade in evenly, since each side of the head slants in a different direction.

I can definitely see how "efficient" may be a better adjective than "aggressive." Either way, I shaved ten hours ago and my face is still quite smooth. Usually after 8 hours, I start to notice stubble starting to make its presence known.

I go with "efficient" also, as I just shave with it, no special technique to avoid injury. For blade installation, put the top cap upside down, blade in it, there are tabs that automatically line it up, then screw on the rest.

Yeah, that's how I do the blade load, just like I do with the 34C. You're right about having no need for special technique to avoid injury. Shaving my chin always required concentration and special care to how I came into my passes, but the slant seemed to just glide over my chin regardless of the direction I came in at.

I have a 39C and while it's not "perfect", it is indeed a "staple" in my collection...meaning, that it's so good as an all-around shaver, that it's not going anywhere.

Congrats, come join the BOSS: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/317346-B-O-S-S-Brotherhood-of-Slant-Shavers

Congrats on it, I really want to purchase and try a 39c Sledgehammer myself. Specially on those times where I let my beard grow a couple weeks neatly mind...but then my lady gets a bit miffed of it so I never get much further than that...so it is still a job for a razor not a trimmer. I I can see where a slant would come in handy, also this past week I lopped off 2 weeks of growth...my 34C HD had a heck of a time...though that was my first time taking my 34C against a real dense 2 week growth made me shake my head but also it was not really designed to take that much off in a few passes so not blaming the razor as it is FAIRLY mild, so yes I need a slant in my life and a 39c would be just the ticket for those times. Also I have neck swirl as some call it...hair lays flat and swirls in places on my neck, so...also need a open comb in my collection, diff tools for diff things. Going out on a date? Open comb...day in day out? 34C HD, going bush whacking? 39c Sledgehammer slant!

Now I got a plan lol. Seriously though excellent buy, can't go wrong there guy! Enjoy!

The "problem" with 37c is that it makes all other dozen of razors of my collection useless, except 39c.
