What's new

I sniff at one of my best razors

I arranged to stay overnight at a friend's house last week to avoid driving in some bad winter weather, so I packed an overnight bag. I love my Gillette LC New more than any other razor I have ever used, but I worry about banging up the teeth with the rigors of travel, even with my traveling case. I chose to pack my Slim, which has been a pretty good travel razor for me recently.

And I didn't like it that much. It felt....awkward. Cumbersome. The balance was off, the head felt bulky, the solid safety bar interfered with the tactile and aural feedback I rely on, and even after a full three-pass shave, I had some bits of stubble hanging around. Same thing happened the next few days, as I continued to use the razor rather than swap the blade to something else.

There were weepers, abrasion, and stubborn stubble. I was not pleased. I think my LC New has made me into such a snob about close shaves that I can't enjoy the Slim anymore. Sigh.

I'm thinking of shining up and selling the Slim, once I run across another New at a flea market and don't have to feel like I'm depleting my little shave den.

How about putting your NEW in a case like this for traveling?

I take my NEW razors along on frequent trips. Three-piece razors are great for travel. Take one apart, wrap the parts in a polishing cloth, and the individual parts are almost indestructible.

Don't feel bad Dan. I have used my NEW and other 3 piece razors so much that I don't care for a TTO at all. Tried my former favorite, my Sheraton the other day. Felt like going from a sports car to a semi. Big, bulky, hard to handle. Sadly, I put it up, didn't even try my Senator.

Oh, dude, I haven't seen a case like that since I threw away the one that came with my first-ever DE razor. I wouldn't be opposed to using that...if it didn't mean that I'd have to pay $20 for the privilege of throwing away another Vincent. The general idea, though, is intriguing.

For some reason, I never thought of this on my own. My packing jobs are somewhat less than precise, and I worry that my cloth would unravel and leave the razor parts exposed. But I suppose I could work on that, with some practice.

In either case, though, I'm going to be tough on myself and insist that I acquire a second New for travel purposes. Limitations like this keep my RAD from interfering seriously with my household budget.

I know, right? I had some good luck in recent months in the antique stores, and even the 1930s OC Aristocrat I netted just wasn't the same for me. At this point, I'm way more interested in finding variations of the New than any TTO.

I agree. I want only 3 piece razors. Now I would LOVE to locate an OC Weber. I know there are some out there. Everyone slammed them in the original thread, so I know there has to be some laying in drawers out there that someone would part with. I just can't seem to locate one. But other than that, I'm with you, variations of the NEW are what I look for now.

Just go buy a tin of Altoids, or a travel soap container, and pack your wrapped up razor in either one.

Eat the Altoids first, of course.

More than likely, you're just used to the NEW. It happens whenever you've used a razor for awhile. I remember using a Slant for nearly a year in 2009/10 or so. When I went to other razors, I found that I had to "learn" them again. The NEW hasn't spoiled you; you've just forgotten the Slim.
