What's new

I need some opinions.

I'm receiving a cool looking handle in a trade and wanted to put a knot in it. I've seen the TGN High Mountain White knot and that's what I'm leaning towards at the moment. I was wanting to know if this was a good knot and if not what should I look at. This will be my first time putting a knot in a brush so I'll be reading up on the procedures. The only brush I've used so far is the 2013 blond boar Remembering Sue if that helps any.

Thanks for any information in advance,
Richard

I have used TGN best, super silvertip, grade A, and finest (both f1 and f2). I like the finest better than the rest, but I have not tried the HMW. Nice handle.

Thanks. I'm looking at spending around $100, so I have a few options available. I want to make this my "flagship" brush.

Beautiful handle, Richard-- nice score! I have experience with the TGN High Mountain White and, in my opinion, it's a great knot. I went with a 24mm in a Rubberset 400. The knot was pricey, but I wanted something special for that handle. Anyway, I really like the way the brush looks and performs, so it was worth it to me. The tips are very soft, but without sacrificing decent backbone. I'd classify its density as moderate. I set the loft at 53mm, incidentally, and I find that the brush is equally good for face or bowl lathering. So, notwithstanding its cost, I have no reservation in recommending the TGN High Mountain White knot.

Ok, since the OP I've acquired a Whipped Dog Silvertip, which is simply AMAZING, and a Semogue Owners Club 2-Band Badger Brush - Cherry Wood, which I have yet to use. So I have a really soft knot and a soft knot with a little more backbone (from what I've read). This handle is porcelain, which I've read is a good hint towards a vintage brush, and it's a 22mm knot. I still have no clue about who, when, and where it was made (if anyone could help with any of that it would be awesome). I don't know if any of this info could help in choosing a knot based on what I have already. Thanks guys, this is a cool handle. So I want a great knot for a cool handle. Which is why I initially chose the HMW. But now the choice is between the TGN HMW and the Shavemac silvertip.

I think I may have stumbled upon your brush in a sold Etsy listing, Richard. It appears that it was part of a shaving set.

The seller described the set as follows:

Men's Shaving Set, "Royal London Gentlemen's Gifts" Cobalt Blue Gold Trim Coat of Arms Motif, Shaving Cup, Shaving Brush, Razor. The set is featured in a high glaze Cobalt Blue with Gold Trim featuring Coat of Arms motif. It seems to be made of China or Porcelain it is not marked as to the exact material used. The Shaving Cup measures approximately 3 3/4 inches in height and 4 inches in diameter at the top open station. The Shaving Brush measures approximately 5 inches in height and the Razor measures approximately 5 inches in height. The Razor takes modern Disposable Razor Blades Cartiridges which can be purchased at any Retail Store therefore this set can easily be used. This is Vintage but the Estate I purchased it from said it is in New condition it was only used as a Display piece. There is no noted damage. This is an elegant and functional Shaving Set, would make a fantastic and unique Gift for any Gentleman.

Incidentally, I don't think you can go wrong with either a Shavemac Silvertip or TGN HMW knot.

Thanks Jim. That's the one I got. I think I got the best part of the set. I may be picking up shave gear left and right but, I only have one cup and will stick with my one cup. It's so perfect that I will never need another. I'll be getting the knot next week so I still have time to thing on it. I'm starting to lean towards the Shavemac simply from the reviews but, the TGN is still in the hunt.
