What's new

I need a hat...

...or more specifically a Fedora, I think. I'm looking for a dress hat to wear with a black wool suit.

Recommendations?

Links?

If I go with a Fedora I know I'd prefer a smaller brim, I'm not trying to look like Indiana Jones.

Great shop.

They do ship.

I recommend the Bailey Carson in senate. Smaller brim, but not a skimpy brim, great style and a versatile color which goes well with both dark and lighter clothing selections.

Keep 'em coming fellas! I haven't yet decided on pricepoint so for now, treat this thread as though money is no option. I'll take any/all suggestions.

Well, if you worked for Red Hat (linux)....

Otherwise, can't you just pull your cape over your head?

Highly recommend www.villagehatshop.com since I own a number of fedoras that I purchased from them. Best prices on the web, fast shipping, always received in excellent condition, HUGE selection, and occasional sales. I have a thing for nice hats and these guys have variety. No I'm not working for them, just one happy customer!

I don't have as much hair on the top of my head anymore, and being a blond with fair colored skin, I tend to burn easy. I ended up getting a hat. This is what I got.

Go poke around the Fedora Lounge.

Don't let an old Harrison Ford role rule out a brim width for you. You should pick a hat that fits your face, attitude and circumstances. If you look good in a tall crown with a wide brim, don't make the error of trying to get a "minimal hat" that looks like it's wearing you...you should be in charge, not the hat.

Best way to find out what works is to try a few on. You may find that a Safari type projects an outdoorsy but well dressed image. The classic look of an Akubra Stylemaster, CEO or Fedora may be what you want. You might feel better with a stingy brim hat ala Sean Connery in the early Bond films, and most hipsters nowadays.

Don't think the color has to be a ringer for the color of the suit.

The price between fur felt (usually rabbit fur) and wool hats is marked, but so is the quality difference. From your tastes in shaving gear, I'd pick you as a guy who wouldn't be happy with a wool hat.

Good luck and most importantly have fun.

I'm not sure if the brim is too wide for you but I have one of these and it is a nice hat. Akubra Bogart.

As Top Gumby said, poke around The Fedora Lounge. A good fedora is going to cost a couple of bucks.

I've purchased ready mades through Hats Plus in Chicago. They have a pretty good selection.

If you get a hat and enjoy wearing it a lot, then you can look at Optimo Hats and Vintage Silhouettes. They are the Rolls and Bentley of Fedoras. They are both "price is not an issue" kind of hats.

The wife's investment
Not much of a hat guy except for their pure functional use, so I only wear a company ball cap when I feel the need to identify myself with my company, or my Tilley when I need to be protected from the sun.

Now as for wearing with a suit I can still recognize the subtle difference between looking stylish and looking like a pimp. You, of course, should know after trying on several, but your wife will "just know" and that is the key. Take her along and listen to, but more importantly, watch her reaction.

My perspective on brim size is that too large looks pimpy and too small looks too loan sharky.

Lots of great advice, fellas!

Keep 'em coming.

Actually, you know... that wouldn't look bad with a black suit .... assuming you don't mind looking like a pimp who lost his feather that is.

So, just curious, don't you have to go about in uniform? Why the black suit?

Indeed when it is work related I have to wear a uniform. Heck, I even have a uniform tuxedo:

The suit is for other personal (not USAF related) occasions.
