What's new

I just halved the value of my pen!

I had an uninked, stickered, Sheaffer 1st year Touchdown pen (the thick model). Like new from the shop, with a crisp imprint, and no scratches or scuff marks. That pen has been lying in my pen case for years, to be looked at, and to imagine how the shops must have been filled with pens like that some day.

Last weekend, I checked the seal, and to my surprise (tested with water) the pen fills convincingly, and does not leak. So today I bit the bullet, removed the stickers, and filled the pen up with Akkerman washable blue ink. After some scribbling, I am pleased to tell that it is a great writer! The coming days will tell if the ink sac is ok indeed, or needs replacement after all (hence the washable ink).

The moment I removed the stickers, and filled up the pen for the first time, I probably halved the resale value.
But do I look forward to using it tomorrow!

Yes, I know that a 1st year TD is more rare than the later TM pens. But a Sheaffer'S pen was made to be used! And that is what I'm finally doing :001_smile

About the only things I'd buy with an eye to resale value would be a car or a house, and I wouldn't leave those unused.:001_smile I can't imagine buying a pen for myself and not writing with it at the earliest opportunity; that's what they're for. Enjoy it!

I got it 10 years ago in a trade. The first years I decided not to use it. But what for? My kids are not interested in vintage pens, so I don't need to keep it pristine for the next generation.

I think the last 10 minutes already gave me more pleasure than the last 10 years :wink2:

Enjoy the pen, I don't think a sticker is worth half a value, I never see much difference when buying a vintage pen between a stickered NOS and a pen still in geeat shape

I think the price difference would be considerable for a 1st year pen (1949), but I don't intend to sell it anyway.

great looking pen. As others have mentioned, I dont think taking the sticker off took off half the value. Enjoy it and use in good health.

I was really worried when I saw the title of this thread :scared:. I'm glad it turned out to be a good one, the best value is your joy in using it!
