I just had my first full shave with an EJ DE89

...and I think I'm in love. So comfortable, so smooth. I was planning to try some different blades soon, as I've only ever used Astra SP's with my Merkur 38C, but the Astra felt so great in the DE89 that I don't know if I need to bother with anything else.

you may not need to explore further, I settled on 38c and ASTRA SP a while back and see no reason to change as I get BBS every morning! now I just mess with new soaps/creams, and just ordered a new brush

I used an EJ de89 and found it massively weak, as in made for an old person. If you check the blade gap chart you'll see why. There's more blade gap in a cartridge razor.

Sounds like you had your base plate upside down. The blade gap on them is considered middle of the road.
