What's new

I just had a wonderful experience

Today I enjoyed my first straight shave! I think I did pretty good. Only a few little nicks, and no razor burn. I am hooked!

Welcome to straights- it is likely that you will never fell the same way about shaving again! Just a few weepers- good for you. :001_smile

I ended up with a nice little gash the first go, but there was no razor burn. :001_rolle

What gear are you using?

Welcome to straights! It is a bit of a bumpy ride to start with but once you have taken off it gets nice and smooth.

Some lime Col. conks soap, omega boar brush, Arthur Revitt Sheffield round point, and a Rup Razor strop.

Congratulations, FlapJack.

As Churchill said, Keep Buggering On. Persistence is the key. Give it some time and you will learn and appreciate the art of straight-razor use and shaving. Your shaves will get better and you will never ever go back to anything other than a straight razor.

It is important, when shaving with a straight, to be aware of which way your stubble grows. That way, you can shave it off more effectively. I don't think this matters very much with cartridge shaving or DE shaving, (Well, a bit, with DE shaving), but with straight-shaving, it is essential. Shave the wrong way and you'll be slicing off more than just hair.

Well I do believe that my time spent with a DE has helped me to make the transition at least a little bit smoother. My first DE shave was a vast improvement over carts. And this is just that much better than a DE IMO. I will not totally rule out the DE. It will be reserved for those days I might be running a little late, and can't spare the extra time for the straight. But I am loving it!

I am glad to hear that you had such a positive experience. I will be getting my first str8t shortly and I am looking forward to my first shave. I have a little trepidation because I have tried using a shavette with disastrous results so I am crossing my fingers that using a real str8t will make a difference. :thumbup1:

That is a fine set up. A round point is a great choice to start and Sheffield blades IMO are as good as they get. Keep us updated as to your progress:001_smile.

I did a 3 pass shave. With some touch up of course. It was a great experience. I have also noticed that my DE shave has vastly improved. Don't know if it has anything to do with shaving with the straight or not. I am not going to complain. I don't always have the time to spend on a straight shave. I work 12 hour shifts, and sometimes I don't get up early enough. I will keep the DE in the rotation for the "Quick" shave. I will always have time for that. Now to get back on track. I had my second straight shave the other day. Again a few weepers, but nothing bad. A little blood never hurt anyone:lol::lol::lol:, but second time around was much better than the first. I will keep y'all updated.
