I just felt an Earthquake!

I know this may not be a big deal to some of you, especially those of you out in Southern CA. But here in North East Ohio we don't have earthquakes. Sure we have terrible winters, and summers with 90% humidity, and constant rainy days that are only broken up with intermittent tornado warnings, our sports teams are the worst, Cleveland is practically dead, and LeBron is leaving, but I don't know if I can deal with freaking earthquakes!

We just had a 5.5 62km NNE of Ottawa, Ontario. about 50 minutes ago.
We felt it in Montreal, our Toronto branch felt it also.

Dont get down on OH sports teams. Some of the best players were indians at one point.

Casey Blake FTW.

don,t worry someone probably dropped their Vision Razor

Stephen Harper, Canada's Prime Minister, was boarding a plane in Ottawa 50 miles from the quake's epicenter when it hit.
He said he didn't notice it. Kind of makes you wonder.

Well now... there goes one more excuse for not moving to SoCal (you know.. the one that goes... I know it gets cold here, but I could never live some place where they have earthquakes!).

I'm in Brampton Ontario Canada and work in Etobicoke . . . the last one I recall we felt like this was back in 88. I'm glad they are few and far between. I've been seeing some tornado warnings this night . . . hope they pass quickly.

I'm told my chocolate lab who has a voice that can put the fear of God into folk . . . found his way to a safe spot in a bathroom . . .

In my 25 years of life, I can only recall a couple earthquakes here in Chicago. The most recent was early in the morning, but the one prior to that was at 10am and it woke me up by the shaking of the house. I find them to be an odd experience. It is very strange to feel the ground move under your feet.

A 5.0? That barely even qualifies as an earthquake. Y'all ain't see nothing.

Ahem. Third generation Los Angeles native here.

For all of you who are virgins or mostly inexperienced, earthquakes seem a lot worse than they actually are. You can work yourself into a lather (heh), but you're usually fine afterwards.

If you ever watch "L.A. Story," the scene where no one reacts to the earthquake is surprisingly accurate. During the last shaker, I was in the shower. My first thought was that I ought to hurry up so I could check the USGS site to see the magnitude and location. Earthquakes are fascinating, not something to worry too much about.

As long as your building codes are up to snuff, injuries and loss of life are very minimal. Unlike those poor souls in Haiti. That was awful what happened there.

When I was in high school we had a small earthquake in GA. Just enough to lightly shake things, nothing major at all. It was enough to wake me up. When I got up the next morning I thought I had dreamt it until I got to school and everybody was talking about it.

Yes, we felt it in Montreal Downtown. One of my customer working at the 10th floor in office building told me it was very strange...
Most train in the Central Station were delayed between 4 and 5PM because VIA Rail found something suspect somewhere in the Montreal-Toronto track. Several hundreds persons were waiting in the main hall. It was crazy...

the Tornado touched down in Midland, just northwest of Barrie. Apparently, there were funnel clouds seen elsewhere, including Orillia and surrounding areas but did not touch down, or where they did no damage was caused.

The Midland tornado apparently caused quite a bit of damage.

Good times. We had one in Southern Ohio about two years ago. I used to live in CA, and got very well acquainted with the feeling. There's more up and down than one would think.

I'm in Ottawa so I felt the quake very well. People on the news keep saying "It never happens here" but it does and very often (not nearly as often as the west coast of course). It's just that most of the time we don't feel it. However, I've felt the 1988, 1993 and 2002 earthquakes while I was in Montreal, not sure how they were felt in Ottawa. And this one caused some considerable damages near the epicentre (old and high buildings...). Anyways, I got the afternoon off as they evacuated our building. Second time in a month they send us home!

And for those tornadoes, it really sucks. We don't have that many trailer parks here in Canada, but it had to find one and destroy it...
