I have a futur, what other DE should I buy

Hi All, 3 weeks into DE shaving, and have been using my futur with feather blades, and have been getting great results and satisfaction, any recommendations on another (i got RAD) DE shaver to buy so I can start a rotation ?

I am looking at a new only, not a vintage, and thinking of an open comb type, any thoughts, opinions or suggestions ?

The Futur is one of the 3 razors I use. Merkur 37c Slant and the Edwin Jagger Chatsworth with the Muhle head.
Either of these would be an excellent choice. Tho neither is open comb, the slant might be the one your looking for

Whatever strikes your fancy or just go wild and try a straight! You'll probably experiment with it eventually anyway and you can save some money by skipping more DE's and just diving in.

BTW I was just kidding about the saving money part. You'll spend plenty on straights.

Since you want to stay with a new production razor, I would recommend the Open Comb version of the Merkur 1904. You would get a traditional style razor with "close to vintage" shaving capabilities.

Plus, these are very reasonably priced and beautiful razors. Most of the vendors that frequent B&B carry this model. Your Futur and a 1904 could easily have you set for life.

Let us know what you decide on!

cheers,

Marty E.

Why not check out BST for a cheap vintage gillette? It doesn't have to be a great looker or a rare and valuble razor, just a super speed or a slim adjustable or fatboy. I dunno about everyone else on here but I think holding a 30-40 year old razor that was shaving beards before I was even born really adds something to the whole experience.

I would say go for a SlantHammer, the Merkur 39C ... if you like the way your Futur handles, you must be into massive heavy razors.

While the 39C is not quite as big as the Futur, its way up there in terms of heftiness. And the geometry of the twisted head will give you an unbelievably close shave, although there is a minor learning curve involved in getting used to the technique of a Slant.

While your at it, go ahead and add a Merkur HD, 34C, to your rotation ... it seems everybody owns one eventually, and it will be a good alternative for those days when you want a kinder, gentler shave.

+1 Futur for the week, straight razor for the weekend.

+1 on the 39C and the 34C. It seems everybody tries those at a time anyway, and you won't have any problems selling them later on.

For an open-comb, new production razor alternative that is not a Merkur, consider a Goodfella. They're available from Westcoast Shaving or Shaving Essentials.

You might also consider a replated NEW head with a custom handle from either Bob's Razor Works (cooncatbob), or iKon (Pureslab).

I like the Merkur HD, and the 1904. Right now those are my go to razors.

You'll have to find the ones that work best for you, but thats half the fun. Enjoy.

Paul

I guess I'm too late with my 0.05cents worth
The Futur, to me anyhow, is the very best modern DE Razor.
It takes some time and focus to learn, but when you do, you will find that it will give you the closest, most irritation free shave possible.
I think this whole razor rotation thing is way overated. It's nice to rotate soaps, or creams, or aftershave tratments, but rotating your razors only takes away from your skill acquisions that it takes to truly master that one razor. Takes away money that you could be spending on new soaps, creams razor blade sampler packs and other fun stuff too.
That being said, I have a nice old Gillette Ball End Tech that I use when I want a quick light shave.
I had RAD as bad as most people here, and I have a drawer full of razors to prove it.
I use the Futur 85% of the time and the Tech the other 15%.
Anyhow, it's all about enjoying your shaves.
Sincerely,
Mike

is, IMHO, a Superspeed. Try it. Magical -- closer, no adjustment required.

Of course, the straights are an adventure that will eventually seduce you...

I'd agree with the 1940's SS. I too started with a futur and realized that simpler razors are better and easier to use. If you want a new razor try the Merkur HD. Ive used all three and have to say the superspeed is the best.

Hope this helps!
