Yes I have to say the advice against using alcohol is a new one on me too.

Yes indeed, I did look there and found the quote you mention. However, that is all it says.

I can't seem to find any reason for it as, to the best of my knowledge, neither IPA or surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol) cause any damage to metals.

From my own experience I have a DE89 clone, chrome plated zamac head, which I used daily for about 2 years before switching to something more aggressive. I still use it occasionally and now, as then, I dunk it in surgical spirit for about 30 secs after rinsing. The plating and the threads still look practically as good as new.
