What's new

I found something unusual on my 1924 ever ready shovel head razor with the long handle

I am new the the forum. Thank you for having me. When cleaning the razor head I noticed a #2 on it. Does anyone know what the number represents?

If I had to guess I would say that is an assembly number.
Thank you for your time. Can you explain more? I know nothing about the manufacturing process. I know the razor was manufactured between 1919 to the mid 30’s, correct? I have been looking for videos that shows how these vintage razors were assembled. I could not find any on YouTube.

The one thing that never really hooked me in this hobby is collecting vintage razors. Having said that, that is a cool razor. I am going to send you a link to another forum in a private message because I don't think we are permitted to post links to other forums on B&B. Remember that I am fairly ignorant on this topic, but it might be that the two represents the second generation, but I really don't know if the manufacturer called it that or version 2, or if that is something that collectors applied to it later on.

Your thoughts are appreciated. Waiting for the link. Thank you.

I just checked my Shovelheads. All but one are the short neck heads.

My single long neck was marked with a '5'. One of my short necks was marked with a '4'. The remainder had no number or other marking in that spot.

My assumption is that the number identifies a particular machine, machine part, or production line used in making the razor or that particular part of the razor.

If razors or parts are having quality issues, the number allows the manufacturer to trace the issue back to the source.

These numbers on the Shovelhead were probably added either in reaction to some manufacturing issues, or possibly at a time when the production process was changing or scaling up.

Welcome to the forum. You seem to be an even bigger Shovelhead fan than I am. Check out the Micromatic Monday thread for all sorts of ASR razor posts.

That makes sense. Some of mine have numbers like yours. Like yours some have no numbers. I am now curious why some have no numbers. What is your thinking on that. Your feedback is appreciated.
