What's new

I found a problem for my irritated neck

I find that newer blades work better for me than a blade on its 2nd or 3rd shave. I also found that my first pass has no problems and neither does my second pass showing that technique is fine. It is when I do a third or forth pass that things start happening. I even use more cream for the lather on the 3rd or 4th passes.

I am thinking of two options:

1. More aggressive razor to drop the number of passes.

2. Use a new blade each shave.

I don't always have a chance to shave everyday, so sometimes, I have two or three days worth of growth to shave resulting in a 4th pass.

I will be taking a new job that will require me to keep a shaved face in order to be able to put on an air mask if necessary (engineer in chemical plant).

I am thinking that more frequent shaving would also help, since a 4th pass won't be necessary, but then I have more passes in a weeks time.

Blades are cheap enough that you could use a new one every shave and not go broke. Also, I agree with your last statement. I think daily shaving could also help.

I shave every other day and have to toss my blades after two shaves. I find a noticeable drop-off in that second shave, requiring extra passes and touch-ups in the chin area. I often wonder if shaving every day would be easier on the blade, but have no need to test that theory. I would have no problem tossing a blade after only one shave. I always use a fresh blade if I'm going someplace special.

Is it the sheer number of passes or is it the direction of the later passes? I could do 30 "first" passes and get no irritation.

What blade(s) are you using?

I found out myself that the quality of shave from a Derby, while passable, is not as good on the third shave.

This may sound a bit crazy but have you tried shaving just your neck with an electric and then shaving the rest as usual with lather and a blade, doing just a touch up on your neck to get whatever the electric didn't? I found that to work very well for me and I have a lot of trouble with neck irritation

The first passes are never a problem for me. I think it is as much the direction of later passes as the number of passes.

I have used electric razors in the past and was never a fan of them, but I admit I never tried following one with a razor.
