What's new

I finally figured out the feather all stainless

Now I won't be giving up my open combs anytime soon but this feather razor is not so bad after all. After a lot of frustration and some razor burn I have finally found a technique that allows me to achieve a 3 pass dfs with bbs above the neck. I have a very course wiry beard and thought it was impossible for me to get a food shave with this razor. I've been working at it for a while now. I had actually put this razor up for sale but my stubbornness wouldn't let me call it quits so easily. Well here's what I did to get a great shave with the feather. Face lathered with Palmolive stick. Used the shallowest angle possible and i used the same technique as I do with the r41, that is ZERO pressure! I mean almost as if you're holding the blade 1mm off your face. I can't believe how great it worked with this mild razor. True, I could achieve the same shave in two passes with the r41 but I just wanted to let you all know that there is some merit to the feather. Try it!

You definitely have more patience than myself and many who have tried the razor. i tried it twice, but gave up on it. Congrats and continued good shaves.

+1 just didn't get it. But I didn't give it much of a chance...so many other options to try :001_tt2:

I'm stubborn, too. Plus, I really like the look, heft, and obvious quality of the AS-D1.

I never go for BBS, but I always get great daily shaves with my AS-D1, especially with a sharp (new) Feather blade. However, I sometimes use a bit of pressure--nowhere near what I would use with a cartridge razor, but perhaps more than I should. I'll try it tomorrow with no pressure at all and see how it goes.

As for the angle, I don't really pay much attention to it. Instead, I just listen to the audible feedback I get and rub my hand over the shaved areas after each pass. Usually, I quit after three passes.

The shallow angle described sounds much like that I use with the closed comb side of the iKon OSS

The OSS CC side is probably the mildest closed comb I've used, yet with with decent prep and light to moderate lather I seem to get results equal to that of more aggressive razors with the same effort and less skin irritation.

That shallow angle was the means that I found to get the Feather to work very well for me and will try the zero pressure you found worked for you. I also use ATG only with the Feather, yes right from the get go. After some more technique practice I'll go back to my regular rotation with the Feather in that rotation. I like to rotate agressive-mild-aggressive-mild...etc. Works very well for me.

I tried every angle possible, i did achieve that BBS bit for me it wasnt worth the extra attention to detail. The 1940's Super speed does the same for me without effort.

I'm very surprised at the comments on this thread. I thought I was one of very few who have had negative posts on the AS. It's a beautiful tool but it's way too mild. I gave it a two week trial; enough is enough.

It is a tough one to master. All it takes is a rock solid consistency in your stoke.

Turn into a shaving machine and this razor is wonderful.

You are right, but it is such a nice looking tool. It's a shame it's not an adjustable.

It's threads like this that prevented me from buying one.
A razor you have to "figure out" isn't worth it.
The Tech is one of the simplest razors out there and it shaves beautifully without any effort.
The Feather isn't too far off in design, but for whatever reason, it's a tricky one to master.

I just don't get it.

EDIT: It's good to hear you got it though. :thumbup1:

New to Feather AS-D1 , first few shaves , from Merkur 38C HD .
Feather requires a different technique ; shorter , slower , strokes at a steeper angle , with less pressure .
And I changed my grip , more similar to the Charles Roberts Method Shaving dart and soup spoon grips .
I like the Merkur but Feather gave a smoother less irritating shave , and in some respects closer too .
Still haven't nailed the neck .
I've had smoother closer shaves with Personna Israeli Reds than the Feather blades which surprised me .
And AOS unscented cream has worked better than Klar Classic , which is a great soap .
I face brushed with a Simpsons PJ3SB and am waiting on a newly purchased Thater 4125/0 2-Band .
Think I'll work with this basic set-up for a while .
But I'm curious to try the Feather Artist Club SS Japanese Style , and an r41 .

I'm glad you had the patience to work it all out - for me I just keep it, because I won't sell it shipped for less than $150 including the stand, and none seems to be interested in paying that money for a razor that just does only work on Japanese type beard or on guys with normal to thick beard with EXTREMELY SOLID GOOD shaving technique and a heck of a lot of patience...........

My beard is pretty rough for a Scandinavian, my stubbles are stiff as he_l - and probably also curvy going, because I have now tried 15-20 4-8 pass shaves with this darn DE razor and I used 10 brand new Feather blades for the testing period, to make sure I always had a super sharp blade in it, and it simply will not cut my whiskers if I have any kind of serious growth showing, which means anything over 1 day stubble it will not cut, it as though this razor whispers to me, when I drive it over my cheek and neck area full of whiskers - 'Hey, I'm the Feather DE Razor, and I'm blind - I can't see your whiskers even if I'm on top of them'

Seriously, I have tried going soft as velvet in anything from 0℃ to 90℃, I have tried going rough and really pushing it hard in anything from 0℃ to 90℃ - heck I've even tried to shave with back part of the handle just to make sure I tried EVERYTHING possible to get this strange beauty to work for me - so far with no luck at all :confused1
I can only use it I ever should need to get an extra shave later the same day if I'm going out at night and need a shave for that - and that happens maybe 10 times a year......so it will collect dust in my den for sure.........love the design, the handle and the heavy stand, hate the razor, it's pretty much useless with my beard growth and/or shaving skills (I have wet shaved with cartridges for 20+ years, and DE shaved for 10 months now)

I definitely DO have stiffer stubbles than regular folks - also have had stiff curly hair before I started head shaving, so maybe this is why the Feather won't bite my hair - IT SIMPLY CAN'T :001_tt2:

I also unfortunately never got it - and still don't get it. The Feather DE rest in peace in its heavy beautiful matte chrome stand in my cabinet - I never use it any more.......after 15-20 shaves with anything from 3-10 passes with this razor......
I once tried to shave my 3+ days growth with - just for the fun of it. I made 6 passes on my neck with a very fine lather, XTG and ATG, 3 passes each - my neck looked almost 75% unshaven after the 6'th pass.

The Feather is a 10+ passsss DE Razor for guys with heavy stiff wire like beard and/or for wet shavers with poor DE technique :001_tongu

Ahhhhhh you mean razors that actually cut hair in less than 10+ passes ATG :001_tt2:

the feather takes more passes than other razors but if used right leaves zero irritation. like the op said, no pressure at all. i love it because i can't even feel it touching me. like the exact opposite of a fusion. i found several angles that work but differently. one is completely on the cap. although someone else said that gave them razor burn. i found wilkinson blades work great in it but only one shave per side. i think this razor is so nice it put my artist club straight in the medicine cabinet. i had used that for a long time and was not that impressed by de. i do not know why everyone loves the r41. i think this is where it is at for me.

i had an unrelated question please. today i bought a high end manicure scissors with a satin finish. i can see bad ripples in the finish. is that normal for satin finish and the as razor is just finished to a different level of workmanship? thanks

edit: i think i can answer my own question. i looked at several high end satin chrome plated items. the as razor is by far the best job. flawless to the naked eye. i do not even see how they plated a cast item so well. leave it to japan. other high end/expensive plated items all seem to have flaws to the naked eye. so i have an idea for those of you that do not like this razor(joke). keep it in plain view so you look the part and do your actual shaving with whichever razor you like!

Obviously you didn't get (or read) my PM some days ago. I asked for a price for both this razor and your R41 Grande, (I have the R41 Std but was just curious about the Grande handle). Even gave you a hint about another razor you had a request about.

God fornøjelse
