What's new

I finally bought a Cobra - One man's musings.

So I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Cobra Classic. I'm not even sure what got over me. I had buyer's remorse as soon as I saw the "shipping notification" from the vendor. "Why on earth did I just spend that much money on a razor? That's crazy!!"

Well it arrived yesterday, and oh boy, what a fine piece it is. The remorse evaporated, and now I'm singing its praises. I'm a hard-core Henckels Rapide fan. I have 3 that I rotate on a daily basis. I love the idea of using a piece of kit that is at least 100 years old, and does such an amazing job on my face. I didn't think that anything could provide a shaving experience like the Rapide.

To be fair, the Cobra doesn't provide the same experience as the Rapide, but the experience it provides is equally enjoyable - just in different ways; much the same as comparing a modern day Ferrari to a Classic Mercedes. They're both amazing, but deliver 2 different kinds of joy.

The Cobra's shave is as close and comfortable as one would expect a well engineered modern version of an SE razor to be. The shave is intuitive and, frankly, dead easy to use. I realize that RAD sometimes gets the better of us, but I must admit that I recommend every LOSER at least give the Cobra a test drive. I'm certainly glad I did.

Good shaving!

That's a lot how I felt when I bought mine - except for the Rapide experience. My biggest problem is trying to figure out which of my razors to enjoy right now because I like them all.

I have to keep mine put away in a dark part of the shave den otherwise I would not use any of my other razors and I enjoy using all of the razors I have too much to let one spoil my fun :001_smile

In fact I don't think I have used my Cobra more than a couple times so far this year as I know if I bring it out, nothing else will have a chance at being used.

Pretty much how I feel, too. If I bring it out and use it until I can tell some difference in the blade it is more than a week and I like to change more frequently. I don't try to keep track of different razors and blades usage anymore because it is just too complicated.

That's the $5.00 dipping bowl from West Elm. I think there's a thread about them around here somewhere. They're great - especially for the price.

I agree with Turtle that the Cobra pretty much "changes the game" in regards to razor rotation. I have a good number of razors and even my wife will ask if my "new one" shaves as good as the Cobra. When I answer to the negative, she then asks me why I just don't use the Cobra everyday.

I really don't have an answer for that one.

My wife thinks I've really lost my mind (not the first time though). But after watching me shave she did say she was envious.

I've actually told my wife that I feel bad that there's no ladies' equivalent to the feeling of a tight haircut, and a super close shave with ultra nice gear. Let's face it, that's why we do this, and don't all just use 'lectric shave. :)

Her reply should be--shoes, handbag, and a nice manicure/pedicure.

I really want one, but, but...I love DE shaving, too.

Shaved with mine for the first time this morning. It's a used one from everyones favorite auction site. THe razor it self appears in very good shape. No problems with plating or fittings and the Cobra logo on the bottom is well defined. After a good prep at the sink ( I usually shower shave), hot face wash and a little pre shave cream, a lathered some Tabac and set to shave with a Feather 'pro guard'. No pressure resulted in an almost BBS shave, brilliant!, closer than my Fatip and done in less time with fewer strokes. No irratation at all and after around 20 mins I threw on some Tabac AS with little if any burn. It's a keeper all right. Now the price I paid with a few blades was about two thirds the price of a new one so I feel it's a good deal. It looks cool aswell. My TTO OC's are staying the others though are under consideration for moving on.

I sold off all DE's and Straights and use my Cobra every day and am very happy about it...:wink2:

Depends on the edge of a straight from what finish. The feather is smooth and sharp. But tamed in the cobra due to exposure and angle.
