I Feel Like a Traitor

Like many(or most) of you I am obsessed with DE shaving. I mean I'm on a shaving blog for pete's sake. I just simply wouldn't shave with anything else. It has been this way for a few years for me, and I am getting the best shaves of my life. That said, my neck is by far my worst spot. Face great. Jawline great. Neck bumpy and irritated with occasional weepers. No matter what I do or how I do it I get the same results. I need to go ATG on my neck or nothing comes off. But if I do Yikes. Recently I have found that if I go WTG on my neck and then buff with a cheap disposable I can get closer on my neck with little irritation. Now how can I be happy shaving my neck with a disposable razor? I want to use my Merkur HD. But I guess whatever works. Anyone else do anything like this???

Nope, but you're certainly not the first to require a combination method to get good results. If it works for you, stick with it! However, I would add that many folks have that one razor, blade, soap/cream or combination thereof that just doesn't work. So, try something new! Good luck!

I used to until I got my DE technique sorted out. It took me a while. mostly because the grain in that area really didn't go the direction I thought it did. I skipped shaving for a day or so and then realized I'd been going the wrong direction for every pass on my neck.

My neck is still my hardest spot to shave. The whiskers tend to grow in several different direction in spots. I find that less pressure is better. I also need to pay closer attention to blade angle because the neck is so contoured.

Yeah, heh. I'm really worried about my neck. I've only just bought into the DE shaving scene and am waiting for all of my gear to show up but my neck has me worried. With my Sensor razor I have to go in 4 different directions to get my neck anywhere near what I would call "shaved". First horizontally from under the chin to the ear. Then from the ear to chin. Then downward vertically from the jaw then back upwards towards the jaw.

How in the heck am I gonna keep a 30 degree angle on this edged weapon against my face through all of that and not end up in shreds?

Hopefully I'll get the hang of it before bleeding out in the bathroom.

This should actually be good news to you.
What this means is that at the CORRECT ANGLE, your neck hair can be cut smoothly without irritation.
Right now that angle is being maintained for you by the position of the blade in a plastic grip.
If you are able to change the angle of your HD to match the pre-positioned blade angle in the disposable, you should be golden.

+1 to the above

Are you going XTG before ATG?

I was also finishing up with a cartridge on my neck for a couple weeks until I figured out what worked for me. Going in all different directions and making too many passes didn't work at all. Now I don't worry about hair direction. I go N-S (short strokes) on the 1st pass, S-N (short strokes) on the 2nd pass and long N-S if I need a 3rd. Also just before I do the neck area I apply extra lather. Try different things each shave and make notes as to what works & what doesn't.

Have you tried blade buffing, but just allowing the weight of the razor to be all the pressure you use?

Take a look at Mantic's video's on advanced shaving techniques. Look at the ones where he show's how to do the J-hook, and the Gillette slide. I've had some great results on my neck using both of these. :thumbup1:

My neck gave me lots of trouble for a long time. I finally decided i was trying too hard to get my neck shaved perfectly...

Now i just give my neck a n-s and a s-n pass and call it good no matter what it looks/feels like. To me a not so perfect shave looks much better than razor burn and dried wheepers.

After i started doing this my redness and irritation has gone way down and my neck looks much better lol.

That's twenty lashes with an empty tube of Proraso for you!:lol:

Just kidding. I have trouble with my neck also. I think if you find something that works for you, stick with it. At least you're still getting the benefits of the DE where you can.

bingo!

I got my first Gillette SuperSpeed in the mail this week (plain flare tip....between blue and red tip).

It is amazing on my neck - it's a very gentle razor (compared to my HD and Slant Merkurs) that seems almost impossible to cut yourself with.

I have never had such a clean shave on my neck - absolutely ZERO irritation or redness. Before you go quietly into that good night and surrender to shaving your neck with a cartridge, give a vintage gillette a go. Either an SS or an adjustable. If you don't like the razor, well....sell it to me :D
