I did my first DE shave this morning

I did my first DE shave this morning. Shaved off a goatee and the rest was a days growth. A tiny speck of blood on the chin (which I had to look for) which I was able to wipe off and a cold slash of water fixed it. The tiny cut was from shaving off the goatee, trying to get the blade thru the hair. Next time I shave a mound of hair, I'll use the clippers to trim it down, then shave it. I have the Merkur 34C, which feels a little too heavy. Going to check the weight and make sure my next razor is lighter. I used a Derby blade from a sampler pack.

Welcome to B&B. Hold on to that 34C, even if you go on to try other, lighter razors. A razor that feels "heavy" now may feel "normal" after you have more experience under your belt. Many experienced shavers appreciate the added effectiveness and stability that a hefty razor provides. Of course, it's a matter of personal preference -- but personal preferences change over time, especially when you're still learning. Good luck!

Welcome...when you find the right razor(s) for you, you will know it.

Its an addiction... I have I bought 3 razors already, only the 34C has been delivered. The other two are a '56 Super Speed & '48 Aristocrat. The Super Speed gets delivered tomorrow, and the Aristocrat probably Monday or Tuesday. They will need cleaning and sterilization before use. I plan on them on rotation while trying different blades, until I figure out which razor / blade combo I like best.

I have no interest in selling it. :) Especially while I am still learning. I am just used to the lightweight plastic disposables, the heavy may grow on me, or with the right blade may end up being my preferred razor.

Hey bud, welcome aboard! One classic tip sooner or later you will get from these forums is to stick for a razor + blade combo until you get a decent technique. Because if you start trying stuff like crazy now you will have to re-test it all over again in 2-6 months (depending how often you shave and how many shaving miles you have under your belt).

I'd say stick to the 34C HD for a month or so, with a mild blade (one favorite combo for me is HD + Sharks, lasts me for 6 shaves 3 passes, but this is VERY personal, all blades reviews from other people will just let you know if it's mild or aggressive, nothing else, you will have to test them all and find the combo best works for you).

Now, trying to be on topic and because this is a Razors subforum... :) ... i love the HD. It's heavy but use it on your favor, do not press hard on the face, just enough to let the blade do its work and give some guidance. The build quality is very nice. Just clean it every couple of shaves to let the chrome shine :)

I love it is only a two piece, easier to screw and easier to do NOT over stress the welding of the male thread, i broke one Cadet (Indian, not recommended even though it's popular) because of that.
