What's new

I did a reverse J-hook

I always get a good, consistent shave just about every time. However after all is done and over, at times I'll feel a bit of roughness along my jaw line on my right side. Now being right handed you'd think that this would be the side with no problems, but as I said I'd find this roughness after I was done and out the door. I'd sometimes run my fingers over the shaved area, I know, I know, faceturbation, and there would be a hint of rough stubble.

My shave technique would seem to take care of everything, a nice smooth DFS shave, and then I'd find that roughness. I'd do the whole advanced shave techniques, the J-hook, Gillette slide, blade buffing whatever, and still that stubble. It happened again today.

It dawned on me that being right handed, I'd always do the J-hook from left to right, and it always seemed to work. Now doing it right to left is just backwards for me. When I use my DE I do the entire shave with my right hand with no problems at all. Feeling the stubble today I could feel that it grew that way, right to left. Talk about an Ah Ha moment. I had always stayed away from doing anything in that backwards motion out of fear that I was not used to doing it, and I'd cut myself.

Since I've been using my straight, and using my left hand quite a bit, I did the J-hook in what I'd call reverse, right to left. Well needless to say that was all I needed to do. My shave instantly went from DFS to if not BBS, to almost there.

Such a simple thing, and what a result. If anyone is having trouble in certain areas of their shave, try doing something different. Try doing it in reverse or backwards. It sure worked for me. Any other members have similar results?

Congrats! Being relatively new to straights, I've had a few aha moments whether they be which direction to shave in or how best to hold the blade to get to a particular area.

Part of the fun of the journey, IMO.

I can't go against the grain. I always end up with bad razor burn so I tend to use j-hooking after 3 passes to pick up. The reverse sounds like a sounds idea... just not for me.

You betcha!! Careful experimentation leads to certain improvement.

Not only that, but if you think about something and then try it you could get better results.

My Pappy always said there was room for improvement in everything we do! :thumbup1:
