What's new

I could live with Feathers and Gillette Blacks forever but.

what's the fun in that!

I've sampled many blades so far and none come close to giving me a more comfortable shave than Feathers and G-Blacks.

Voskhod is a close 3rd, but it didn't handle my "3 day beard" test as smooth as Feathers and G-Blacks

I've been saving at least one blade of every one that i've tried and here is a pic of all the blades. I've also tried Shark SS but I guess I didn't save a blade to add to the collection.

Bics, Shark SS, and Mem, never made it past the first pass, I tossed them after only a few strokes.

Here are the blades I have but haven't tried yet. Maybe one of these will be added to the "forever" blades.
That's a Personna Lab btw.

Hey man! I toddled into this forum to give you a shout-out in regards to the G-Blacks! Tried one today and, Oh Baby! thats smooth! Thanks for resurrecting the blade exchange!

Try some Rapiras, compare the cost then re-consider!

I have a thick beard and prefer a very sharp blade. These are good for at least 2-3 shaves per blade for me, are as comfortable as an Israeli Personna, Med Prep, or Gillette Silver Blue for me. But at the price it's almost a no-brainer!

my pleasure! the G-Blacks were an eye opening blade when I first tried them. it was a "wow what a great shave" moment.

I leave the cost out of my shaves. I'd much rather spend 30 cents per blade and have amazing shaves than 10 cents and only get ok shaves. The cost is so minimal to begin with i'm not going to penny pinch and sacrifice a comfortable shave.

Now if I could find something that shaves me well as Feathers or Blacks at half the cost then of course why not! which i think that is what you are suggesting with the Rapiras. I swear at one point i did try them but i can't remember, and i don't have the saved blade. I'll have to score some and give them try.

I'm by no means settling on Feathers and G-Blacks but as of now those 2 blades are THE BLADES.

I'm with you on the G-Blacks, but not the Feathers. I have a wiry beard and never get more than 2.5 shaves from a Feather, with the first shave not being very smooth and the second being excellent. The Blacks are smooth and sharp from shave one through shave 5. I can see the Feather being a fine blade for some, just not me. I actually get 3 better shaves from a Personna Red than I do from a Feather, so I would go G-Black and P-Reds if I had to pick two, but I'm like you about not wanting to settle for a pair. I also like Med Preps and Polsilver SI's almost as much as the Blacks, and Timors almost as much as Reds. Plenty of good blades to play with and choose from.

I have blind tested 10 blades since the beginning of March. With only 10 more to go in my assortment I'll definitely keep a look out on the exchange for some of the more difficult to obtain blades. The exchange is fantastic Toothpick, and I'm sure happy that it's continuing while I wade through my little experiment. When it's all said and done, I'll definitely have some blades for donation and trade.

I have a thick beard as well. One where it appears I need to shave a couple of hours after shaving; without regard to how BBS my face is. In the 10 blades I've blind tested, 2 didn't make it beyond the first pass, 1 lasted a full 6 shaves, and 1 was so sharp and smooth that I received my first ever shaving related nicks (I did not respect it, and had to first find then unseal my styptic). I really cannot wait to find out which ones they are and share my results.

I picked up a pack of G-Blacks from Pasteurs last week along with some Polsilvers (not tried them yet)
For me, they are more forgiving than the Feathers, (which I now only use in very mild razors) but no discernable improvement on the Voskhods from what I have seen so far. It's early days yet though as I am only on my 2nd G-Black.
Definitely a quality blade and I'm looking forward to trying them in a few different razors. So far I had 4 shaves in a Black Adjustable and 1 shave in an EJ86.

The blade itself? or wrapper?

Does anyone have a picture of the G-Blacks?
in the first pic of the post, middle row, 3rd blade down.

those appear to be the gillette blues, or as I would say, G-Blues :001_smile

I have never used these but they are "Super Platinum" just like the blacks.

What's the difference if any? I know the G-Blacks usually have a +2 free blades in each pack, maybe that's the only difference...

i agree on them except the feathers, now my wife loves em. i like the blacks a lot they are smooth and pretty sharp but not the sharpest out there, voskhods are great when used in a very agressive razor. in my de89 i cant use them they simply are not sharp enough. i tried the cheap rapiras and ehh they were decent tugged some and not smooth at least not to me. now the rapira swede and lux are FAR better imo its a toss up i find the swede a bit sharper the lux a bit smoother both excellent in the right razor.
