What's new

I can't be the only one

Like many of you gents, I have several razors in my rotation and keep trying new blades from sampler packs. Just when I think that I have found the perfect blade, I put it in a different razor and the results are less than perfect. I have changed blades from razor to razor and have come to the conclusion that certain blades just seem to work better in certain razors. I understand that some razors are more aggressive than others but it is not just a matter of aggressiveness. Do any of you pair razors with certain blades?

Regards,

Doug

yes I do, this is something that i learned early on. I must have gone through 20 different blades in 7 different razors. What works best for me is a super sharp blade like a gillette 7 o'clock yellow sharpedge in a mild razor like a edwin jagger de89l. I have collections of blades for different razors. The blades which i find quite mild like german wilkinson sword or bic platinums, i'll use in an adjustble and dial it up a notch.

I don't. I will never write a review of a blade because I just can't tell the difference in modern blades. That is just me though. I have - oddly enough - a pile of loose blades (still wrapped). I just work off of the pile.

I also have discovered this observation early on. Certain blades just did not work with certain razors in my rotation. However, most of my favorites do work in my Merkur Progress, Slim, and Red-Tip.

same here.. can give you a list of the ones that didn't work for any of my razors, the ones that work for some but not others, and a list of ones that work for all.

unfortunately, i've only tried a handful of blades, and the list of razors bought keeps growing so that list is still in progress.

i think the goal is to find the blade that works for most of your razors. if you really like a blade but it only works for one razor, then you better like that razor. Who'd want a blade when it's only good for one or two razors.

So far the feathers are pretty amazing for the razors i've tried. Amazing with the red tip, very good with the fatboy and slim, and great with my black-handle super speed. I haven't tried it with any of the open comb's i just got my hands on this month, but I went ahead and bought bulk feathers since it works with a handful of my favorite razors.

it's all part of the fun looking for that great combination.

I have found the Astra Superior Platinum and the Gillette 7 O'clock Super Platinum both work really well in my 46-47 Aristocrat and 40s style SS but the Gillette super thins I don't like and last night I tried a feather in my Aristocrat and it cuts worse than my week old Astra blade.

I did 2 passes with the feather blade and it still was not as close as a single pass with the Astra or 7 O'clock super plat was with a single pass.

As we all know with blades is a YMMV kind of thing. There are soo many variables that can affect how a blade preforms.

Usually I just like a good blade with a good razor, and its not that important what one. However, that being said my black handle Super Speed works way better with Sharks than anything else.

I agree with this...mostly. I use Feather's exclusively, after working my way through several samplers a few years ago. The Feather's were super sharp and smooth every time. Nothing else compared, and everything else felt the same. If it's not a Feather, one blade is just like another IMHO.

I tried feathers in my Tech, not impressed. Tried them in my Merkur slant, no joy. Thinking mebbe feathers are not for me, I tried them in my Fatboy. Wow! I can get a really good shave with a derby, Israeli personna red or Wilkinson sword in my slant or tech, but a feather at a 9 setting in my fatboy is a different thing.

It's almost an article of faith for many of us. Personally, I have good results across the board with the blades I have found acceptable. But certain combinations work especially well for some of us. If you find something, stay with it!
